Chapter 63: Hell’s Gate Reopened Just Before Midnight
しおりを挟む
Back in Fairy Greatmother’s cottage in the swamp…
“DIE, SHERLOCK!!”
A knife flew through the air — fast, aimed at the head — toward the second person stepping into the cottage: Ryo.
He gasped, eyes wide, and instinctively raised both arms, shutting his eyes tightly as he braced for impact—
Clink.
There was no pain.
Ryo slowly opened his eyes, unsure if the knife had missed or struck.
In front of him stood Titania, unmoving… her left hand raised.
The blade trembled between her fingers, caught midair.
Ryo lowered his arms, stunned. “Holy crap… that was a close one.”
Across the room, the attacker — Seraphine — stood wild-eyed and fuming, hand still outstretched from the throw.
Behind her, Clarisse gripped a second knife, her posture firm, ready to launch it straight at the detective.
The sisters had somehow escaped their restraints. Now, a murderous gleam burned in their eyes as they glared.
Titania, however, glared back harder.
Her voice dropped low — guttural, furious. “You foolish sisters… you dare harm my mother’s humble guest?”
A shimmering aura of glowing green magic began to surge around her body like heat off a fire.
Seraphine snapped, spitting the words like venom. “BY ORDER OF OUR MASTER, WE WILL ENSURE SHERLOCK PERISHES AT OUR HANDS!!”
Clarisse raised her knife, teeth clenched. “Your blood will stain my blade — NOW DIE!”
But before the sisters could make their move, Titania snapped her fingers.
An invisible wave of force slammed downward — Gravity Magic.
WHUMP!
The sisters crashed to the floor, helpless. They grunted and twisted, unable to move.
Clarisse's blade clattered from her hand.
“How… could this be… possible…” she muttered, barely breathing.
Seraphine groaned, her voice faint and broken. “Must… kill… no matter what.”
Titania’s eyes glowed an intense bright green. She raised her right arm, hand curled, aiming at the sisters. Her lips parted slightly, and her voice dropped to a deadly hush—a whisper that echoed with raw power.
“Now die, you tw—”
“STOP IT, TITANIA!!” Fairy Greatmother’s voice cut through the air like lightning.
From behind, she stepped in front of her daughter, quickly lowering Titania’s arm just as the magic was about to surge.
Titania flinched. Her whole body froze.
Fairy Greatmother’s voice was firm, but layered with care. “These two are cursed, like I said before! That is not THEM speaking!!”
Titania stood trembling, the green light in her eyes slowly fading, and the green aura surrounding her body beginning to dissipate.
Then—
She collapsed forward, hugging Fairy Greatmother tightly, sobbing into her shoulder.
“I’m so… rry… Mother… I almost did it again—HUUUUU HUUUUUUUU!!”
Fairy Greatmother caught her gently, holding her daughter close, stroking her head with slow, loving motions.
Her voice softened, tender and calm.
“Now, now… there, my dear sweet Titania. It’s alright now. You won’t have to go through what happened before ever again.”
Ryo, watching the scene, furrowed his brows, heart heavy, muttered.
“…Just what the heck happened before…? Just… what did Titania do…?”
Still embracing Titania, Fairy Greatmother gently raised her wand toward the fallen sisters. A pulse of soft golden light shimmered through the air — dispelling the gravity magic.
The next wave of magic flowed like a lullaby: a sleeping spell.
Seraphine and Clarisse exhaled one last breath — and fell into peaceful slumber.
Since Titania kept on whimpering, Fairy Greatmother told everyone she needed time to console her. The group agreed.
Ryo figured something bad must’ve happened in the past—something horrible Titania did that she deeply regrets. Whatever it was, it clearly broke her. And now… it haunted her like a trauma that wouldn’t leave.
So, everyone quietly entered the cottage.
Ryo took a moment to look around the interior. To his surprise, it was exactly the type of fairytale cottage he’d seen in old storybooks:
Wooden beams crossing overhead
Stone hearth with a kettle hanging
Clay pots stacked neatly near the fireplace
Hand-carved furniture
And shelves lined with bottles and jars of herbs and mysterious liquids.
A home filled with age, magic, and warmth.
…And also kind of messy.
Papers were scattered across the floor, as if someone had been panicking over research or spells. It didn’t look like anyone had cleaned in a while. Or maybe it was because the cursed sisters had thrashed so violently, freeing themselves from their restraints and going wild—right before Ryo entered, just as a knife flew toward his face earlier.
Sophie and Elise immediately offered to help tidy up and prepare some tea along with light treats from their baskets to soothe Titania’s mind. Fairy Greatmother smiled gratefully and thanked them before gently guiding the trembling Titania to a wooden table near the fireplace and helping her into a chair. Soon after, the tea and light treats were served—not just to Titania, but to everyone—filling the cottage with comforting warmth.
Outside, the Cu Sith stood guard, watching for any intruders besides Ryo’s group, who had been welcomed inside. After ensuring the area was secure, he tried to squeeze his massive body into the cottage—but, unsurprisingly, he was too large to fit. The hulking wolf-beast simply stood there with an unbothered expression.
Ryo turned to him, raising an eyebrow. “So how are you gonna get in here, Mr. Fantasy Talking Wolf?”
Cu Sith gave him a long, baffled stare… before letting out a smug grin.
“Like I said before, strange foreigner—I am the guardian of this cottage. Do you really think I’ve never entered it before?”
Ryo shrugged, unconvinced. “Oh suuuuuure. Lemme guess—you’ve got some magical cheat skill that lets you walk through walls despite being built like a horse.”
Cu Sith blinked at him. “…I have never heard the term ‘cheat skill’. But—” he grinned, “I do possess the ability to change my size.”
With that, the Cu Sith’s body shimmered in a soft green light. And then—he shrunk.
Right before Ryo’s eyes, the massive beast transformed into the size of a regular dog. He trotted into the cottage with all the dignity of a noble lord, then stopped in front of Ryo. Puffing out his chest proudly, Cu Sith gave a satisfied smirk.
“How’s that, strange foreigner? Have I utterly shocked you with my brilliance?”
Ryo’s eye twitched. He pointed at the dog-sized creature.
“…Bro, did the effects of the Italian guy’s magic shrooms just wear off? Is this your original form?”
Cu Sith frowned, clearly not getting the reference.
“Excuse me, strange human… I am unfamiliar with these terms. But why does it feel like you’re mocking me? And no—this is not my original form. My huge, majestic self is.”
He narrowed his eyes. “And what, pray tell, is a ‘bro’?”
Ryo waved him off. “Just a totally normal way to refer to either a friend, a dude who’s chill, or someone who really deserves a dropkick to the teeth—but like, you’d still hang out with them after.”
Cu Sith narrowed his eyes, clearly lost. “…I will choose not to unpack that, strange foreigner.”
He walked past Ryo with an annoyed flick of his tail. “I shall move these two worthless sisters to the corner and have them restrained again.”
Then Cu Sith stopped before the sleeping sisters.
He leaned in close, sniffed their hair with a long, strong inhale. Then exhaled.
He licked his lips. Grinned. And suddenly, the sleeping sisters started to look a little less like people… and a little more like meals.
His mouth slowly opened, sharp teeth bared as he loomed over one of their heads—
Ryo sighed.
He casually stepped forward, crouched beside the beast, and without a word, placed his right hand on top of the Cu Sith’s head. With a light push, he lowered the beast’s head slightly, like one might discipline a naughty dog.
“Okay, okay, that’s enough, Dr. Snouts.”
The Cu Sith froze.
Then jerked his head away and whipped around toward Ryo, shouting.
“DON’T YOU DARE TOUCH MY HEAD LIKE THAT! AND WHAT IS WITH THAT NAME?!”
Ryo raised both hands defensively and squinted. “What? You prefer… Dr. Snouts 5000?”
The Cu Sith’s face twisted in disbelief. “Why do you add such a high number now to that insulting name?!”
Ryo stared blankly. “I mean, you were sniffing these girls’ hair like a creepy old man on a metro. So I figured strong sniffing equals strong power level. Power level 5000. It tracks.” He thumbed at himself. “All thanks to yours truly.”
“…Dr. Snouts 5000…” the Cu Sith muttered, slowly facepalming with his paw in disbelief, cringing at Ryo’s terrible naming skills. Then he growled and admitted, “That’s right. I was trying to eat them. So what—”
Ryo sat down cross-legged, arms crossed, staring flatly, listening—already knowing the cliché backstory that was about to come.
Dr. Snouts 5000 growled deeper. “Humans have been cruel to my kind. They hunted us, slaughtered us, until our numbers grew thin. I… I lost my family when I was just a cub…”
[Author’s Note: The mighty Cu Sith has officially been upgraded to Dr. Snouts 5000 — because a legendary beast of forgotten folklore with high-powered sniffing skills deserves a high-tech name, at least according to the Great Detective’s brain.]
He continued, his voice guttural, his words heavy with old wounds. “That is why… I was about to devour these sisters. A message. A punishment—”
Ryo, completely ignoring the speech after hearing it way too many times on TV, casually took off his bag and unzipped it.
Dr. Snouts 5000 didn’t notice. “—because I carry the pain of generations! I am the last of—”
Ryo pulled out a wrapped sausage and unwrapped it with a rustle.
Dr. Snouts 5000 paused, scowling. “WERE YOU EVEN LISTENING TO ME?!”
Ryo’s face was serious. “Listen up, Dr. Snouts 5000. I get it. The whole ‘humans were cruel, so now the fantasy species fights back’ revenge arc trope? Seen it. Like, a million times in movies. Totally overdone. My cupboard was stuffed with CDs of that nonsense when I was a kid—each one costing a small fortune, like 2,500 to 4,500 yen.”
“…Movies? CDs? 2,500 to 4,500 yen?” Dr. Snouts 5000 tilted his head. “What… in Evendelle are you talking about, strange foreigner?”
Ryo leaned closer, sausage in hand, continuing his so-called powerful speech.
“But there’s one true path to end all this hatred. One ultimate solution to heal the pain of the past... and it comes from some food-based anime I’ve seen.”
He held the sausage close to Dr. Snouts 5000’s snout, like a protagonist offering an item of hope to a troubled character with a dark and tragic past.
“And it’s… food like this.”
Dr. Snouts 5000 stared at him, deadpan and a bit worried. “…Are you quite alright in the head?”
But then… he leaned in and sniffed the sausage.
And gasped.
He took a step back, trembling, eyes wide. “…What… is that… glorious smell…?”
Ryo’s voice softened into a whisper. “This… is the smell… of world peace.”
Dr. Snouts 5000’s breath hitched.
Something inside him stirred.
A deep, primal knowing.
A whisper from fate that if he didn’t taste this sausage now… he would forever be incomplete.
Forever tied to his hatred.
His eyes trembled. And then he leaned in—shaken—and took a bite.
And then—
He saw it.
A vision.
Endless fields of flowers. Sausages wrapped in paper danced and laughed joyfully, gesturing for him to come over. He ran to them, joyful and laughing like a cub, playing with his new best friends in a field of eternal, meat-based harmony.
Then the vision faded.
Tears fell from his eyes.
“…Strange foreigner…” he whispered, voice choked with emotion. “Could this be… world peace…?”
Ryo patted his head solemnly. “Yeah. Totally world peace.”
Across the cottage, all the ladies had turned to stare.
Titania wiped her remaining tears, her whimpering ceased. Regaining her composure, she turned toward the bizarre display.
“…What’s… going on… Sith?”
Dr. Snouts 5000 turned toward her slowly. Face serious. Tears still fresh.
“My Lady…” he said with reverence. “Allow me to introduce myself.”
Titania looked confused. “Pardon? But… you are Sith…”
He tilted his head dramatically toward the ceiling. “No longer!”
He turned back, placing a paw solemnly on Ryo’s shoulder. “As of today… I am Dr. Snouts 5000.” He nodded to Ryo. “And this strange foreigner… is my bro.”
A moment of stunned silence.
Titania blinked, processing. “…Oh… I… see?”
Fairy Greatmother, who had been quietly watching the entire exchange, clapped her hands joyfully.
“Oh my! I’m so glad you finally found your first friend, my dear Sith—I mean, dear Dr. Snouts 5000!”
Then Ryo stood up and turned to Titania. “So… how’re you feeling now?”
Titania slowly rose and approached him. She stopped just before him, brushing a few strands of hair behind her ear.
“I’m alright now,” she said softly. “Apologies for crying like that… It’s just that my past is…”
She trailed off. Her eyes fell.
She couldn’t say more—it hurt too much.
But Ryo understood. Some pasts were better left unsaid.
With a quiet, knowing smile, he said. “It’s okay.”
Then gently placed his right hand on her shoulder.
“You don’t have to say a thing. Honestly… you should’ve cried louder. You’d have felt way more refreshed, despite the pain.”
Titania blinked, caught off guard. “I should’ve… cried louder?”
“Yeah,” Ryo replied with a shrug. “Honestly, Dr. Snouts 5000 had such a cool moment earlier, I didn’t even hear you crying. And hey… if you really wanna let it out and not embarrass your mom over there—” he thumbed toward Fairy Greatmother “—you can cry in front of me somewhere else. I won’t judge. I’ll just listen. No cheesy uplifting protagonist speech from me. I’m just a good listener. That’s it.”
Titania’s eyes widened.
Her cheeks flushed pink.
Her lips parted slightly… then curved into a sly, seductive smile.
She reached up, took his hand from her shoulder, held it gently between both of hers, and leaned in.
“In that case,” she purred, her voice low and inviting, “let’s step outside for a bit… since you do want to hear my obnoxious crying.”
Ryo blinked.
Then smiled and nodded. “Sure.”
Titania, still holding his hand, turned and seductively led him out of the cottage, like a woman inviting her oblivious crush to her room for an intense, steamy, forbidden moment. The door clicked shut behind them.
Inside, a silence fell.
Everyone waited.
Dr. Snouts 5000’s ears twitched.
Something was… off.
A cold sweat broke out on the side of his head.
He narrowed his eyes. “…I got a bad feeling about this.”
Then it began. “WAAAAAAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA—!!”
The sound exploded from outside like a banshee siren.
The entire cottage shook like it had been hit by a magical earthquake.
Chairs rattled. Dust fell from the ceiling.
Everyone inside nearly stumbled over from the force of it.
The very swamp echoed the cry—trees trembled, birds flew away, frogs jumped into hiding.
The snakes beneath the cottage slithered deeper into the swamp water, retreating swiftly into their hiding holes.
And still, it continued.
Titania’s full-powered dramatic crying.
Wailing. Screaming. Sniffling. Sobbing.
5 Minutes later….
Then—at last—it ended.
The door creaked open.
Titania walked back in with a refreshed smile, glowing with newfound peace like a maiden reborn. Her arms wrapped around Ryo’s, clinging to him happily, her cheek resting on his shoulder—like a girlfriend who finally found peace after her boyfriend listened to all her tears.
As for Ryo?
He looked like a man who had stared into the abyss.
Completely pale. Expression blank. His soul nearly visible as it tried to float out through his open mouth.
Titania let him go, sighing contentedly.
Ryo staggered over to the wooden table.
He dropped into the chair like a soldier returning from war.
Then slowly slumped forward… buried his face in his hands.
He said nothing.
Dr. Snouts 5000 quietly approached and placed a gentle paw on Ryo’s knee, looking up at him with a sympathetic frown.
“…Bro… are you alright? You needn’t have gone that far to help my lady.”
Ryo’s voice was weak. Shaky. Laced with sarcasm.
“No, bro… listening to other people… cry and scream? Totally normal. It’s my… regular day-to-day hustle.”
Off to the side, Titania kept staring at Ryo.
Her eyes half-lidded. Her lips parted again.
She slowly licked her lips, eyes darkening as she imagined the naughty secret things they could share together.
Fairy Greatmother watched with visible concern. Her brow furrowed, eyes shifting between the two.
Then, in a low mutter only she could hear.
“…Oh dear… Mr. Detective caught my Titania’s heart too. And again… he wasn’t even trying,” she said, because obviously, he wasn’t even trying—didn’t even intend to.
Ryo sat in silence for a few minutes, face still buried in one hand, recovering.
Then, with a small sigh, he finally straightened up and turned to Titania.
“Can I start hearing about the evidence now?” he asked, his tone quiet but ready to work again.
Titania, who had been admiring him from a distance, tilted her head.
“The explanation can wait,” she said. Then her expression sobered. “There’s something you need to see first. Come… look at the sisters’ necks and bodies.”
Ryo stood, confused, and approached the sleeping stepsisters.
He knelt beside them—his sharp eyes scanning their arms, stomach, and necks.
His breath caught.
Claw marks raked across their arms. Angry red scratches lined their torsos. And worse—faint bruises in the shape of fingers were wrapped around their necks.
“The hell…?” Ryo whispered. “Titania… what happened to them?”
Titania stepped closer, her expression grim. “The curse is still active. And it forces them to obey commands from the one who placed it.”
She crossed her arms. “Whoever cursed them… must’ve ordered them to kill themselves.”
Ryo turned to her sharply. “They tried to—?”
Titania nodded. “Yes. Judging from the wounds, they likely clawed at themselves in desperation… even tried choking themselves. But then they saw you—and they stopped. That’s when they threw the knife instead.”
Ryo looked at the sisters again, now with understanding and quiet horror.
“Do you have a way to remove the curse?” he asked.
“Yes,” Titania replied. “But not here.”
She gazed down at the floor, her voice growing more formal.
“While I was home—back in the Fairy Kingdom of Lunaveth—I spoke with my sister and my father. We have a method. A ritual. But it has to be done in our land.”
She let out a breath. “I left the sisters in this cottage originally because my father feared they might lose control… that their curse might spread to others. But now that we have a safe way to extract the curse, I’ve been given permission to bring them in.”
“The Fairy Kingdom?” Ryo thought, furrowing his brow. “The one that got invaded by the Vrakuls and went to war with them 15 years ago?”
He raised a hand. “Why go all the way there? My crew here has to be at the Royal Ball tonight—we’re trying to find more leads on Cinderella’s kidnappers and her whereabouts. Do we even have time to travel to another kingdom?”
Dr. Snouts 5000 stepped forward, tail swishing.
“Do not worry about the distance, bro,” he said confidently. Then he tilted his head toward the back door. “Lunaveth is just on the other side of that door.”
Ryo blinked.
His brain stuttered. “…Umm. Excuse me? That door leads to the swamp, doesn’t it?”
Titania simply smiled.
And without answering, she, Dr. Snouts 5000, and Fairy Greatmother all walked to the back door together.
Fairy Greatmother turned the knob, then looked back at them with a soft smile.
“Come along now, Mr. Detective. Sophie. Elise. Let us go to my home—my kingdom.”
Sophie frowned. “We’re going to another kingdom? Like, together? Through that door? Is that possible?”
Elise blinked rapidly. “That’s just a door, right? That’s still just a door, right?!”
Ryo rubbed his temple and muttered. “Don’t tell me it’s like some fantasy magical door.”
Then, cautiously, the three of them stepped forward.
Fairy Greatmother opened the door.
And what they saw… stole their breath away.
A deep violet sky stretched endlessly, steeped in twilight. Three moons hung in harmony—silver, blue, and faintly gold—casting layered reflections across the luminous land. Rolling hills shimmered with bioluminescent grass that swayed gently in a soothing breeze.
Rivers of liquid glass flowed through the valley like glowing ribbons, glinting with a final blush before turning translucent under the moonlight.
Levitating stone bridges floated elegantly in the air, connecting spiraling towers and petal-shaped platforms that hovered above the ground. Enormous trees with crystal leaves glowed from within, their hanging blossoms swaying like lanterns.
At the heart of it all bloomed a city of surreal beauty—spiral towers wrapped in vines, floating domes, and rooftops shaped like unfolding flowers, glowing softly like candlelight. Far in the distance, the Celestine Spires rose like silver shards piercing the sky, flickering like ancient stars.
Soft petals drifted on the breeze like living snow, while glowing flora bloomed in soft pinks, blues, and golds—each pulse of light in sync with the slow breathing of the enchanted land.
The kingdom was alive. Not in chaos or sound—but in serenity. A dream in motion.
Titania stepped forward. Her cloak fluttered as she turned dramatically to face them, lips curled in proud amusement, arms outstretched.
“Strange foreign man,” she said, eyes twinkling. “And the two servants… welcome to the Fairy Kingdom of Lunaveth.”
Ryo, Sophie, and Elise stared.
Then, in perfect unison—
“HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH?!”
Ryo was beyond awestruck.
It felt like he had stepped into an entirely different world — even more dreamlike than the Fairytale World he’d already known. He took a few steps forward through the glowing grass, then spun around and glanced back.
Inside, it was still the same cottage — wide and cozy, nestled in the middle of a foggy swamp. But from outside, beyond the backdoor, now that he was standing in this place…
The entrance was just a tree.
A single, ancient-looking tree. Not even that wide — barely as wide as a door. Yet somehow, within its bark, it held the entire Fairy Greatmother’s cottage.
Ryo stared at the trunk, speechless. Then groaned in disbelief, rubbing the back of his head.
“Nothing weird about that. Totally normal. Like stepping into a five-star onsen—no water, no steam, just a killer fantasy panoramic view that makes up for it.”
Titania chuckled softly under her breath at Ryo’s sarcasm. With a flick of her fingers, she summoned a gentle levitation spell. The two stepsisters, still sound asleep, began to rise into the air, cradled by soft green light. She guided them out from the cottage and into the kingdom.
Ryo turned to Fairy Greatmother, still trying to wrap his head around everything.
“Ma’am… where exactly is this kingdom located? Is this an entirely different world?”
Fairy Greatmother smiled kindly and shook her head.
“Oh no, my dear. We’re still in the same world — just on the other side of it.”
Ryo’s eyes nearly popped out of his head. “WAIT WHAT?!”
His gaze shot up toward the sky. And sure enough — it was evening now. That had to mean it was true. This place wasn’t in another dimension — it was just somewhere far, far away from Evendelle.
But then something else caught his eye. Something was wrong… making him feel like he was standing on an entirely different planet — even though he’d been told he was still in the same world.
There weren’t just stars overhead. There were moons.
Three of them.
One silver.
One blue.
One faintly gold.
All positioned, side by side, casting reflections laying over each other across the landscape.
Back in Evendelle… there had only ever been one moon at night. He was sure of it.
“Why… why are there three moons above this kingdom?” Ryo asked slowly, blinking hard.
Dr. Snouts 5000 stepped up beside him. “Ah yes… strange, isn’t it?” he said with a chuckle. “Those three moons are tidally locked to this side of the world.”
Ryo scratched his head, now more confused than ever, but then, in realization, he said. “Wait a sec… could it be…?”
Titania turned toward him, her tone calm and informative.
“Yes. No matter how many times the sun rises or sets… those three moons will always remain above this land. They never move. But the rest of the world sees only one moon that rises and sets as usual.”
Ryo squinted up at the alien-like sky, brow furrowed in disbelief.
“…Are you telling me… this world has four moons?”
Titania and Dr. Snouts 5000 nodded together.
Ryo sighed.
Then muttered under his breath, his voice dripping with dry sarcasm.
“Fantastic. No — even better. Honestly, it’s perfect. Just what I needed. Even more bizarre fantasy nonsense piled onto this already absurd fairytale world… nonsense that laughs in the face of scientific logic.”
From the skies above, shapes began to descend — swift, graceful, and glinting with silver.
Flying figures.
Fairies in gleaming armor — six in total — soared down with trained precision. Their wings shimmered like fragments of moonlight. Clearly, these weren’t ordinary fairies — they were Fairy Warriors.
But one among them stood out.
She wasn’t wearing armor. Instead, she wore a flowing turquoise gown. Her short turquoise hair fluttered like silk as she descended ahead of the others. She looked radiant — appearing in her mid to late twenties — and waved eagerly as she called out.
“MOTHER! SISTER TITANIA!”
Fairy Greatmother raised both hands, ready for an embrace, beaming with joy.
“Ah, my dear lovely Vesmyra! Come here and give me a hug, sweetheart!”
Ryo’s jaw dropped as the woman touched down softly on the grass and rushed to embrace both Titania and Fairy Greatmother.
His thoughts scrambled in disbelief. “Wait a minute… THAT’S Vesmyra? The Fairy with the Turquoise Hair?! Pinocchio’s fairy?!”
Then Ryo noticed something about Vesmyra… unlike her mother, she had fairy wings—but, like her mother, she lacked the pointed ears of a fairy.
Vesmyra smiled warmly as she pulled away from the hug.
“Welcome home, you two. We’ve all been waiting for you so we can begin the curse-removal ritual.”
She glanced past them, toward Ryo. “Is that the strange foreign man you told me about?”
Ryo gave a silent groan. “Of course. Even on this side of the Fairytale World, I’m still automatically labeled ‘Strange Foreign Man’ like it’s some kind of default RPG character name…”
Titania gestured toward him and spoke plainly.
“That’s right, big sister. This is the strange foreign man who’s helping Mother find Cinderella.”
Vesmyra’s expression soured instantly.
She planted both hands on her hips and glared at Titania, pouting with a dramatic huff.
“Seriously, Sister Titania — you’re centuries older than both Mother and me, and yet you still call me your big sister? I’m only 40 years old, you know.”
Ryo twitched, thinking. “Wait… 40? Is she serious? She looks like she’s in her mid to late twenties… just like that Sultana I met in Al-Munira — old in age, young in looks.”
Then Vesmyra stepped forward with elegance and placed a hand gracefully over her chest.
Her smile was radiant, her tone soft.
“Greetings, Strange Foreign Man. My name is Vesmyra Seravelle — daughter of Mother Roselia, and proud big sister of my oldest younger sister, Titania.”
Ryo deadpanned, managing a dry smile.
“Riiiiiight. Nice to meet you too, youngest older sister. You’ve got… a pretty complicated family tree, don’t you?”
Vesmyra laughed awkwardly, rubbing the back of her head.
“Ahahaha… I blame my older little sister here for all the confusion. She wants to stay the youngest in the family, even though she’s almost as old as our kingdom.”
Titania crossed her arms, turned her face away, and pouted. “Hmph!”
But Ryo wasn’t smiling anymore.
His thoughts began to drift.
Fairy Greatmother had told him before — Vesmyra, the Fairy with turquoise hair, had once adopted a child: a girl named Thalirea, a name Vesmyra had given her. Thalirea had been a proud fairy warrior but was lost to the Vrakul’s void during the devastating War 15 years ago in Lunaveth.
In the original story of Pinocchio, the Fairy with turquoise hair adopted a boy — Pinocchio himself. She raised him, guided him, and helped him become a better person. She was like a mother to him, and when her purpose was fulfilled, she vanished.
The fairy standing before him now — Vesmyra — was she that same Fairy with turquoise hair? Had she adopted Pinocchio like in the original tale before Thalirea came into her life?
There were too many questions.
But he couldn’t ask. Not yet.
Right now, removing the stepsisters’ curse… and finding Cinderella are the priority.
Then the rest of the fairies in armor—still hovering above—descended and landed before Fairy Greatmother. They dropped to one knee, heads bowed, a fist pressed to the grass, voices united.
“Welcome back, our queen. The king has awaited your return.”
Fairy Greatmother sighed, clearly exasperated. “I told him I prefer the Fairy Warriors to regard me not as a queen, but simply as one like any other fairy or human.”
Ryo blinked and turned to her, surprise written all over his face. “Ma’am… you’re the queen here? Not Titania?”
Fairy Greatmother tilted her head, puzzled. “Why yes, dear. What made you think Titania was the queen?”
Ryo rubbed the back of his neck. “…Oh. It’s nothing.”
It was not nothing.
In Titania’s original Forgotten Folklore, she was known as the Queen of all fairies. But here? Another twist. This kingdom’s queen was Fairy Greatmother instead. And apparently, she also worked as a schoolteacher in Evendelle, meaning she somehow managed both running a fairy kingdom and grading homework.
Vesmyra told the group to follow her to the floating platform crowned with a great tree—the Elderglade Spire—a palace of sorts where her father, the king, awaited.
They set off. Fairy Warriors flanked them on all sides like a living honor guard. Elise and Sophie walked stiffly, clearly unused to being treated like high-profile guests instead of servants. Ryo, on the other hand, strolled along as casually as if this were a Sunday market.
Dr. Snouts 5000 trotted alongside him, still rambling on about sausage like it was the most important thing in the world. Eventually, the Cu Sith gave the classic puppy-dog look and asked for more. With a dramatic sigh, Ryo handed over two more sausages, silently praying this was the last round before he became the official sausage supplier forever.
The group crossed an arched bridge, the river below so clear it looked like a strip of glass, leaving Ryo and the servants in awe. Suddenly, Titania grabbed Ryo’s arm, still clearly smitten, and immediately began asking what type of woman he liked. Feeling totally awkward, Ryo said he wanted someone who could keep a certain sausage-obsessed wolf quiet by supplying an endless supply of sausages.
Vesmyra glanced back and spotted Titania, her older younger sister, practically glued to Ryo. She felt a little jealous — here she was, looking beautiful and young in her 40s but never having dated anyone. Not missing a beat, Vesmyra ordered a Fairy Warrior to lead the way and slid in beside Ryo. Of course, she asked the same question.
Now caught between two gorgeous, mature-looking fairies, Ryo felt like he’d accidentally walked into another fantasy harem anime. With a resigned sigh, he gave Vesmyra the same answer — a woman who could keep that sausage-crazed wolf quiet with an endless supply of sausages.
Fairy Greatmother watched the exchanges between her two daughters and the detective, her expression growing even more baffled. Not only had the detective somehow made Titania fall for him without even trying, but now Vesmyra was showing interest as well. The thought crossed her mind that she might one day have to call the detective her son-in-law—though she didn’t realize Vesmyra wasn’t fully invested in Ryo… at least, not yet.
They climbed a winding staircase crafted from twisted tree trunks, spiraling upward through towering evergreens. Then, tiny, adorable fairies—childlike and no bigger than sparrows—appeared. They peeked out from behind a tree, hovering in the air and whispering to each other about the strange human in the long coat.
Soon, driven by curiosity, a whole cluster of them circled Ryo, chattering and asking which kingdom he came from. Without missing a beat, he smiled and lied through his teeth: “The Rodent’s Cheddar Kingdom.”
The name alone made the smaller fairies gasp in awe, clapping as they imagined a grand, poetic-sounding kingdom—completely unaware it was actually a rat-themed amusement park. Then the fairies asked if Lady Vesmyra and Lady Titania were his wives now, since they were walking so close on either side of him.
Ryo just shrugged and said not yet, but he did want someone who could cook a great hotdog for a certain wolf. The smaller fairies gasped in awe and clapped again, convinced his taste in women was extraordinarily high — even though they had no idea what a hotdog was.
With the smaller fairies departing, the group finally arrived at the entrance to the Elderglade Spire. Its great doorway glowed with soft light, intricate designs curling like vines across its frame.
Titania and Vesmyra extended their hands toward the entrance.
The air shivered—its frame glowing faintly—before it dissolved, not in smoke or dust, but as though fire were devouring paper. Edges curled inward, glowing, vanishing piece by piece, until nothing remained.
The group stepped inside. And froze.
It was a throne room. Vast. Silent. Heavy with an ancient presence.
At its heart lay a massive dark-green magic circle, etched into the wooden floor. Around it stood eight Fairy warriors—four men and four women—each clad in silver armor, cloaks draped over their shoulders, standing as still as statues.
Beyond them, upon a raised platform, sat the Fairy King.
A fist rested against his cheek. Long white hair flowed over light silver-and-green armor and a beard like spun frost framed his face. A crown of silver branches circled his brow. His pointed ears and large luminous wings marked him as fairy-born. Yet his gaze was fixed—not on the guests—but on the two floating, sleeping sisters behind them.
Ryo, though no mage, felt the man’s power pressing against his skin like heat from a forge. And to think—this was Titania and Vesmyra’s father… and Fairy Greatmother’s husband.
The three women— Fairy Greatmother, Titania, Vesmyra—stepped forward and knelt.
Roselia smiled warmly. “Good evening, darling. How have you been?”
The king did not answer. His narrowed eyes never left the sisters.
Vesmyra rose, speaking softly. “Father, at least introduce yourself to this strange foreign man and his companions.”
Still, silence. His gaze did not waver, fixed on the sleeping sisters, as if he sensed a hidden danger within them, and he knew it beforehand.
Ryo leaned toward Dr. Snouts 5000 beside him and whispered. “Hey, bro. What’s with him? And does he have a name?”
Dr. Snouts 5000 whispered back, “Even I’m not certain why he’s so silent. He’s never like this. And his name is King Nuada Airgetlám.”
Ryo’s breath caught.
That name… it stirred something deep within him. Forget fairy tales. Forget folklore.
This Fairy King—he was something else. An Irish legend, the silver-handed king of myth. And somehow… he was here.
Titania stood, her expression shifting to unease. “Father, is something wrong? Why are you quiet?”
Nuada raised a single hand. Magic surged from him like a silent wave, seizing Titania’s levitation spell and twisting it to his own. Titania gasped. With a sharp flick of his finger, the sleeping sisters shot forward, gliding through the air and dropping into the center of the magic circle before anyone could react.
His raised hand clenched into a fist.
A BOOM! cracked through the throne room as he slammed it down on his armrest.
Nuada’s voice rang, deep and unshakable. “LET THE RITUAL COMMENCE!”
The warriors moved at once.
They began chanting, their voices layering into an unearthly chorus. Bands of blinding white magic lashed out, binding the sisters hand and foot. The magic circle flared, bathing the room in green light.
Lightning arced over the sisters’ bodies.
They stirred—their blackened eyes snapping open—then screamed, thrashing against their restraints.
Ryo’s gut tightened. He wanted to help—every instinct screamed at him to move. He saw it in the others too—hesitation burning in Fairy Greatmother’s eyes, unease in the servants’ shoulders. But no one stepped forward. Though the curse removal ritual had begun abruptly, it had to be done.
The light intensified. Their screams rose. And then—suddenly—both went limp. Eyes still open… until black smoke—no, black miasma—streamed from their eyes like shadows. Their eyes’ natural color returned, and they finally went completely limp, unconscious.
The miasma did not dissipate. It whirled above them, forming a vortex that shrieked like tearing metal.
Ryo’s instincts flared red. With one hand, he swiftly drew his gun from his coat and, with the other, unsheathed the Arabian magic-dispelling dagger—the Khanjar of the Forgotten Oasis. Fairy Greatmother summoned her wand in a flash of golden light. Titania and Vesmyra assumed their battle stances, ready for whatever came next.
Dr. Snouts 5000 expanded back into his large Cu Sith form and growled. Even the surrounding Fairy warriors shifted, hands on weapons and wands, wings flaring.
The vortex took shape.
A massive, elephantine head loomed, tusks curving like ivory scythes. Its long, thick serpent body—black and glistening with scales—coiled tightly within the throne room, stretching some 60 meters in length—just over half the length of a football field—and wreathed in the same black miasma as before.
It encircled the sisters…
Ryo’s eyes widened. He knew that shape. It couldn’t be—he’d seen this beast before, in ancient African legends, the kind spoken of in old books and depicted in games.
“OH, GREAT,” he groaned loudly, his voice cracking in disbelief. “A FREAKIN’ VRAKUL IN GROOTSLANG FORM!!!”
He turned sharply to the two Fairy warriors standing near Elise and Sophie. “GET THESE TWO OUT! NOW!”
They didn’t argue. In one swift motion, each grabbed a servant, cradling them as they exited the building and took flight, streaking toward safety.
The Grootslang’s head turned slowly toward Ryo, eyes blazing with a fury that radiated from every inch of its massive form. An intense hatred seemed to drip from its very being, thick and suffocating. In that moment, Ryo realized with chilling certainty—this monster was the dark reason the sisters were so desperately obsessed with killing him.
Nuada rose from his throne, voice cutting through the air like a blade.
“HISTORY MUST NOT REPEAT THE HORRORS OF 15 YEARS AGO! WARRIORS, STEEL YOURSELVES AND STRIKE WITH UNWAVERING FURY!”
The Grootslang roared, a sound that tore through and vibrated the air.
“GROOOOSHHHHRRRAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!”
