Chapter 0: The Great Calamity

The Day the Gods Return

     She continues to sleep in a heavy stone coffin. The man who offered these to her say delicate girl, still seemingly full of life yet motionless, clutches a single flower and a Letter back with a sigh, his face a mix of affection and resignation.

     On a certain beach in the Southeastern Sea region of Japan, in front of a newly built grand torii gate, several temporary tents are lined up. Underneath them sit formally dressed adults with stern faces, gazing at the coffin and altar. Behind them, on the seawall a short distance away, a crowd of onlookers has gathered, eerily silent.

     The sound of the waves is drowned out by the noise of heavy machinery as the lid of the stone coffin, suspended by a crane, is brought over. It is carefully placed, and the workers proceed with their tasks in a detached manner. Once the sound of the electric tools tightening the large bolts at the corners of the coffin ceases, silence returns. This signals the start of the ceremony, and a Shinto priest, likely sent from a renowned shrine, begins to wave the *ōnusa(*Japanese Shinto tools) towards the coffin and the sea, chanting blessings.

     **Tsugumi**, the Great Goddess of the Sea. A new name bestowed upon the spirit of the girl. This elaborate ritual, more a sealing than a funeral, is conducted because a nation, and indeed the world, has killed a single girl.

    As the blessings conclude, the coffin is swiftly carried off to sea by boat. And so, she descends alone into the deep, cold ocean.

     People leave, and even as the site is dismantled and dusk falls, the man remains alone, gazing out to sea.


     Three months later, the man has become disheveled. In a cluttered, dark room, he slouches on a sofa, listlessly watching TV. The screen shows an occult-themed program, with a revered figure in the field passionately speaking.

"This is the prophecy hidden in Japanese mythology. 'The Day the Gods Return' refers to the day when gods surpass AI and appear before us as AGI, General Artificial Intelligence. There's talk of the first humanoid AGI already being born in Japan. But what happened to Tsugumi? After the project was frozen, she was recently enshrined in the sea, wasn't she? Yes, a god. She awakens! Humanity will be punished by the returned god, and a new era will begin for those who remain. There are various interpretations of this punishment, but it's coming next year... 2038..."

     Turning off the TV mid-sentence, he mutters to his reflection in the darkened screen, "The Day the Gods Return, huh... She's not coming back..."
     With a weary sigh, he collapses on the spot and closes his eyes.


     One year later, unnoticed by the world, a meteorite falls off the coast of Japan. It doesn't take long for anomalies to occur.

     Military facilities around the world are suddenly thrown into chaos. Weapons of mass destruction and hypersonic missiles go haywire, all targeting Japan. Although emergency measures prevent any launches, further calamities descend.
     Amidst the ongoing turmoil, autonomous weapons owned by various countries begin to malfunction. Again, Japan is the target. As each country scrambles to destroy or shoot down their own machines, those that slip through set their sights on Japan.

     Japan's own defense equipment is no exception. Drones armed with rifles weave through the cityscape. Initially, the country, too accustomed to peace, is fascinated by them. Cameras held by curious youths begin to record the tragedy.
     Bullets rain down mercilessly on the panicked crowd, regardless of age or gender. A shell explodes in a traffic jam, instantly igniting the area in flames. Soon after, autonomous tanks break through the walls of a Self-Defense Force base and emerge onto public roads.

     Japan is forced to defend against attacks from both inside and outside. The Self-Defense Forces, already weakened by the initial chaos, rapidly lose their capabilities under the relentless assault of tireless autonomous weapons.
     The island nation, once proud of its scientific achievements and unique culture, is filled with death and destruction.
