The Beginning
#2 – In the Pitch-Black Rain, the Blind One Makes a Decision
しおりを挟む
Silence blanketed the surroundings as black rain, laced with radiation, began to fall. Zero couldn’t suppress a laugh at the eerie stillness and the sensation of the rain against his skin—it felt exciting. A few who had narrowly reacted in time to the explosion caused by Arc managed to rise, only to be met by the thunderous screams echoing around them. Even that chaos only stirred Zero’s curiosity further, and he revealed his full delight without restraint.
Just then, the divine unit known as the Aminiz arrived late. (Aminiz are elite squads selected from the various godly security forces, organized based on the size of the cities they protect.) Noticing the absence of the Stone God, who should have arrived earlier, they immediately deduced that Arc had killed him.
The Aminiz formed a tight formation around Arc, attacking from all directions: lightning from above, spears from the sides, and fire from below.
Once again, blood gushed from Arc’s back as he grew large crimson wings, wrapping them around himself like a shield. He struck back, cutting through the Aminiz with sweeping blows—but they had strength in numbers, and there seemed to be no end to them.
Watching this, Elt re-enforced the barrier around Zero, then excitedly joined the fray on Arc’s side. Scales sprouted from Elt’s arms, transforming them into reptilian limbs. Unlike Arc’s, the wings that grew from his back resembled thin membranes stretching from strong, exposed bones. With a fierce cry, Elt dove alone into the heart of the Aminiz formation. Once at the center, he unleashed a roar so powerful it shook the earth and sky. The shockwave reached deep into their brains, causing their cells to decay. Most of the Aminiz were annihilated in that instant, though a few remained.
Arc grabbed some of the feathers floating around him and, in an instant, formed a blade that seemed pitch-black, but had streaks of crimson within. With it, he decapitated the remaining Aminiz. The blade then absorbed blood from their severed arteries. Arc even stomped on the fallen heads, absorbing the blood that splattered—this act was as natural to him as breathing.
As everything fell silent again, Zero’s loud laughter echoed through the stillness. Arc, disturbed to his core, approached Zero. Though he had just killed everyone himself, he grew furious at Zero’s laughter in the face of death and shouted at him in rage.
Zero, unable to grasp the situation fully, didn’t understand what Arc was angry about. Half-jokingly, he replied, “Don’t be mad.”
Arc brought the blade to Zero’s neck and made a precise one-centimeter cut, causing blood to gush out. Zero’s face twisted in pain, as if in slow motion, tears burst forth, and he began to sob, unable to breathe.
Though Zero had always lived in this godly world full of fear and restriction, this was the first time he truly felt the fear of death. Blind as he was, he had always felt like he was living while dying—but even more than that, a stronger desire for discovery had always driven him. As his blood spilled, he sensed the silence around him, and realized the scent of death, flowing from him, now filled the air. Simultaneously, a strange mix of hatred and fascination toward Arc began to bloom within him.
This complex emotional duality would become the core feeling that guided Zero through the many choices he would face in the future.
Through sobs, Zero asked,
“What will you do now?”
Arc responded only with “Nothing,” in utter silence.
Whether that silence truly reached him or not, Zero reflected that the silence within himself mirrored Arc’s, and he muttered sincerely,
“I don’t want anyone else to end up like me…”
But saying such things to Arc was pointless. Arc’s goal was to become completely alone in this world. Only Elt, standing nearby, understood that.
Arc had a clear process for killing. No—there were specific gods he wanted to kill. He hated wasting time, so he chose not to kill Zero or the others here. To him, everyone else was just insects.
To Zero, Arc said:
“To fulfill life is a miracle. It is happiness. And it is evil.”
He then wrapped himself in the remaining blood on the ground, locked eyes with Elt for a moment, and vanished.
Zero didn’t understand what Arc meant at the time. But 18 days later, he would realize just how important those words were.
Elt, deeply intrigued by the exchange between Arc and Zero, grinned darkly. Since Arc hadn’t killed Zero, it meant Zero didn’t fear Arc on the surface—making it more likely Zero could influence him in unexpected ways.
Facing away, Elt spoke to Zero as if musing aloud:
“You can stay here, or move forward. I’ve taken a liking to you, so as long as you stay close to me, I’ll keep you safe. But I can’t guarantee I’ll always be able to protect you. Just because I like you doesn’t mean you’re number one to me—I am. So, what will you do? There’s a scene I want to see. That’s why I’m heading straight to where I need to go. Even if it’s straight into darkness.”
Without hesitation, Zero opened his sightless eyes as wide as he could—not with words, but with a small nod. In that moment, he made a decision:
I want to know how many other sensations of being alive there are out there.

辺境伯の娘さんと婚約という話だから辺境伯の主人公へのあたりも結構なものだけど、娘さんは美人だから万事OK。
