Episode 4: "The Villainess Puts Her Luxuries on the Auction Block"

It was the morning after the genius scholar, Erich, had made a dramatic recovery thanks to a single slice of bread. A room in the castle was filled with a quiet but palpable tension that had condensed during the night. It was as if the calm before the storm was playing the prelude to the upheaval that was about to unfold.
In the center of the room sat a heavy ebony table, likely the largest in the castle. Spread across its vast surface, in a state of disarray that still held a certain kind of order, were a complete map of the kingdom drawn with meticulous lines and a staggering number of parchment bundles, stacked as if they were an authority unto themselves. Glaring at this immense collection of documents with the fierce intensity of warriors about to slay a mortal enemy were three people: myself, Alicia von Kreis; Erich, who had regained his healthy complexion as if yesterday's weakness had been a lie, his eyes now gleaming with the brilliant light of intellect; and, by some cruel twist of fate, the steadfastly honest Knight Captain, Klaus von Steiner, who had been forcibly dragged into this secret council on the nation's survival.
The tension in the room felt like a physical pressure weighing down on our shoulders. To break the heavy silence, I forced my dry lips open.
"Erich, I'll be direct. What is the exact current balance of the national treasury?"
My question echoed sharply in the quiet. As if he had been waiting for it, Erich quickly pulled a single ledger from the pile and, with his thin but strong, gnarled fingers, opened it to a specific page.
"Yes, Lady Alicia. After working through the night to scrutinize every ledger and recalculate them repeatedly... it is with the utmost regret that I must report."
He paused for a moment. In that brief silence, the sound of someone swallowing sounded unnaturally loud.
"If the current financial situation continues, our nation's functions will come to a complete halt in less than six months."
"Six months!?"
The dumbfounded cry that escaped my lips echoed emptily in the high-ceilinged room. At the sound, the thick eyebrows of Klaus, who stood beside me with his arms crossed, as still as a statue, twitched. His expression remained as hard as an iron mask, but that slight movement spoke volumes of his inner turmoil.
Erich, paying no mind to our reactions, pointed to a spot in the ledger with academic composure. His fingertip seemed to tremble slightly, but it felt less like fear and more like a warrior's thrill in the face of this desperate situation.
"Please look here. The royal family's expenses, the ambiguous grants to powerful nobles, the costs for hollow festivals held only to curry favor with the populace... this spending far, fatally, exceeds our meager revenue. Unless we immediately undertake drastic spending cuts and simultaneously secure new sources of revenue, the future of this country is..."
Erich cut himself off. But everyone present could easily imagine the words that would follow.
"...nonexistent. That's what you're saying," I finished, my voice so dry and cracked it surprised me. A heavy silence fell upon the room like a block of lead. It was a deep, dark silence that seemed to suck away all hope and nurture only despair.
My gaze drifted to the window. Outside, a peaceful scene unfolded, one that was utterly at odds with our situation. The strong early summer sun brightly illuminated the fresh green of the well-tended gardens, and small birds flitting from branch to branch chirped idly and cheerfully. That idyllic, everyday landscape made the contrast with the despair in our room all the more cruel.
This country was dying. And yet, the people living upon its body had not yet realized that fact.
"Spending cuts will be met with fierce resistance from the nobles, who are entrenched in their vested interests. It will take too much time. Our most urgent task is to secure a source of revenue that will have an immediate effect."
I broke the long silence and slowly stood up. Then, looking at the two men who were crushed by despair, I let a bold smile touch my lips and declared loudly:
"To start, I will sell off all of my personal assets."
""...Huh?""
Klaus and Erich's voices harmonized perfectly, like a well-trained choir.
Erich's large eyes flew wide open, and he stared at me in utter disbelief. His intelligent face was laid bare with a child-like vulnerability from pure shock. As for Knight Captain Klaus, the impact was so great that the perfect deadpan he had spent years cultivating crumbled with a clatter. He was completely frozen with a gormless expression, like a pigeon struck by a peashooter. His mouth hung half-open, and his eyes, which usually held a sharp glint, were simply wandering through empty space.
"My personal assets," I repeated, crossing my arms and stating it as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "The mountains of dresses, the pointlessly sparkling jewels, the countless pieces of tacky art. If we convert all of that into cash, it should be enough for some initial operating funds."
Finally snapping back to his senses, Klaus's face paled as he began to frantically admonish me.
"A-Are you in your right mind, Lady Alicia!? For a princess to sell off her own personal belongings is an unprecedented outrage! The authority of the royal family will be dragged through the mud!"
His voice was nearly a scream. To him, the authority of the royal family was likely more precious than his own life. But to me, right now, it was nothing more than a worthless illusion.
"Does 'authority' fill a hungry stomach, Klaus? If the country itself perishes, the royal family's authority and glory will all vanish like seafoam. Or what? Is it your desired path of chivalry to clutch a stone called 'authority' and starve to death alongside the people?"
When I spoke coldly, Klaus was at a loss for words. "W-Well..." His loyalty was genuine. That was precisely why he had no way to refute the painful truth my words held.
Beside Klaus, Erich had begun to calculate something with furious speed. His fingers danced in the air, his lips moved silently, and his eyes were no longer those of a human.
"I see... I see! Lady Alicia's wardrobe, and that abominable treasure vault... if we estimate the market value of the items stored within... oh... OOOOH! This... this will amount to a tremendous sum!"
The scholar's eyes began to shine with a predatory, ambitious light, like a carnivore that had finally found its long-sought prey. There was no longer any trace of despair in his gaze. There was only the intellectual excitement and joy of having found a concrete plan to overcome this unprecedented crisis. It seemed I had completely secured this powerful ally.
"Alright, it's decided! We have no time to waste. Let's start the preparations at once!"
At my command, the castle, which had been wrapped in silence, was literally thrown into the vortex of an unprecedented commotion.
The first thing we tackled was the cleanup of the gigantic wardrobe, a room that could be called the very symbol of the former Alicia's desires. The moment I pushed open the heavy doors, a murmur that was a mixture of awe and exasperation escaped from the sturdy knights who had been gathered to help.
Spread before us was a nightmarish scene, a chaotic mix of splendor and confusion.
"What is this volume... Even if I changed into a different dress once a day, it would probably take ten years to wear them all..."
Every wall was covered with enormous closets that reached the ceiling. Inside, dresses of every color—red, blue, yellow, green—were packed in as tightly as a compressed rainbow. Gleaming silks, smooth velvets, delicate laces... the materials used and the designs applied were of infinite variety. But they all had one thing in common: the concept of practicality was completely absent. They were all pointlessly extravagant and had cost an immense amount of human labor and money.
I rolled up my sleeves and bravely waded into the sea of dresses.
"Ugh, what's this? A dress made of peacock feathers? It looks flashy, but the feathers probably fall out with every step, making it a pain to clean up after. Alright, let's sell this one! It might be amusing to sell it to a lady with a feather allergy."
"This dress here has such extravagant gold embroidery, it's practically armor. If you wore this, your shoulders would be stiff and immobile within an hour. For sale!"
"This pure white fur coat... just how many small animals' lives were sacrificed for this...? To help their souls find peace, let's sell this for an exorbitant price!"
I gave out instructions briskly and without a shred of mercy, sorting the dresses to be sold from those that would be kept (though only a few). Behind me, the maids looked as if they were about to burst into tears, watching the works of art they had spent years meticulously caring for being treated like trash and tossed into a pile with a single word: "For sale." I'm sorry, I thought. But this is for the good of the country, and by extension, for your futures. I offered a small, silent apology in my heart.
Next, we headed to the treasure vault. This place was an even more shockingly tasteless space than the wardrobe.
The moment the door opened, what jumped into my eyes was a flood of light, light, and more light. Upon polished obsidian shelves, dazzling jewels were lined up as if to show off. A tiara with a giant diamond the size of a chicken's egg, a pearl necklace as thick as a healthy baby's arm, and countless brooches encrusted with every kind of gemstone imaginable, packed as densely as insects.
"...This is less a necklace and more a blunt weapon. If someone were seriously hit with this, they would definitely die."
I held up a necklace made of several enormous, connected rubies, my arm trembling from its sheer weight, and muttered in complete exasperation. Who would want to hang something like this from their neck? It could only be seen as an instrument of torture.
The art pieces were even worse. What was particularly egregious were the self-portraits of the former Alicia. There were at least a dozen of them, and for some reason, they were all painted from an annoyingly condescending high angle, as if looking down on the viewer. The smug smiles made my stomach churn just by looking at them.
"These are obviously not sellable. Let's just sell these gaudy golden frames. As for the unpleasant paintings inside... well, when winter comes, you can use them as firewood for the hearth."
At my cold and merciless sorting, the knights who were helping all looked pale, but they continued their work in silence. They, too, must have felt the miserable state of the country firsthand. Among them, only Klaus was watching me with a complex, contemplative expression, but when our eyes met, he quickly looked away awkwardly, like a child caught doing something wrong.
And so, three days of hellish sorting passed.
The central plaza, said to be the largest and most beautiful in the castle, was enveloped in an unprecedented, strange fervor.
A refreshing early summer breeze blew through the assembled crowd, and the sky was a high, clear blue without a single cloud. Around the plaza, finely dressed nobles who had been specially invited for the day and sharp-witted merchants who had smelled the scent of a profitable venture were packed together. None of them had any idea what was about to begin, and they whispered to each other with expressions mixing confusion and curiosity.
In the center of the plaza, a small hill had been built from the junk... no, the treasures that had been my personal property just three days ago. Colorful dresses fluttered and waved in the wind, and the jewels arranged carelessly on tables reflected the brilliant, pouring sunlight in every direction, casting a dazzling sparkle.
I calmly walked up to a hastily built wooden platform in the center and took a deep breath. I could feel every gaze in the crowd piercing me like a needle. It's fine. In my past life, I succeeded in presentations under even more pressure than this.
Alright, let's do this.
"Ladies and gentlemen! Thank you all so much for gathering here today despite your busy schedules!"
When I projected my voice from the bottom of my belly, the previously buzzing plaza fell dead silent. Every gaze was focused on me alone on the stage. The cold, contemptuous eyes of the nobles, thinking, "What on earth is this foolish princess planning now?" The probing, appraising eyes of the merchants, thinking, "This smells like a business opportunity for us." I met all of them head-on.
"As you can see, piled high here are the very items that I once owned! Today, to all of you who support our country on a daily basis! As a token of my gratitude, I would like to offer them to you at a special price! This is what we call... The First Ever! Alicia Presents! The Cry-With-Joy Nation-Saving Charity Auction!"
I could see the nobles, who had been sneering until now, literally freeze at my grand declaration. "Has this princess finally lost her mind?" was written clearly on their faces. Good. That was the reaction I expected.
"Come now, everyone, don't be shy! That single gem you buy will become the bread for a soldier defending our border tomorrow! That one dress you win will become a textbook for the children who will carry this country's future!"
I mobilized all the presentation skills I had cultivated in my past life and every bit of knowledge from late-night TV shopping programs I had vaguely watched, and delivered a rousing pitch. The crowd, initially taken aback, especially the merchants, began to look more and more serious.
"Now, our momentous first item is this! The magnificent dress made of peacock feathers that I just mentioned! Look at the luster of these feathers, shining in seven colors under the sunlight! If you attend a ball in this, you will undoubtedly be the star of the party! Now, let's get things started with a brisk one hundred gold coins!"
At my energetic pace, the merchants, who had been put off at first, began to work their abacuses. When it came to sniffing out a profit, their senses were the sharpest.
"One hundred and ten!" a portly merchant immediately called out.
"One hundred and twenty!" another voice shot out from a different seat, not to be outdone.
The price was rising, slowly but surely. Yes, good! I can't let this momentum stop.
"My lady over there! Yes, you! That lavish dress would look absolutely divine on one with your elegant beauty! You will certainly stand out three times more than the Countess next to you!"
"And you, sir! If you present that ruby necklace to your beloved wife, peace in your household will be guaranteed for all eternity! Come on, buy it, buy it! If not now, when?!"
Like a fish in water, I vibrantly sold off the items one after another.
"This golden frame that once held a tacky self-portrait of the former Alicia! The carving alone is the work of a master craftsman! Replace the contents with your own portrait, and the prestige of your house will rise three levels!"
"This here is a secret heirloom vase passed down through the royal family (or so the story goes)! You can use it for flowers, or as a container! If you buy it, something good might happen! Whether you believe it or not is up to you!"
Finally, one of the prideful nobles could no longer stand my eccentric behavior. A shrill scream echoed through the plaza.
"S-Stop this, Lady Alicia! For a princess to behave in such an unseemly manner! This is a disgrace to the royal family!"
At that high-pitched voice, I stopped dead in my tracks and aimed the special megaphone Erich had made, which I was using as a microphone, at the chubby marquis who was the source of the voice.
"Silence, you octopus!"
"O-Octo...!?"
The marquis was speechless. He probably never dreamed he would be called an octopus by a princess.
"A disgrace? Unseemly? Do you really think such superficial vanities will protect the future of this teetering country!? Where do you think the money you all waste on your nightly balls comes from! It is all from the sweat and tears of the people! If you have a complaint, then you can buy this diamond tiara for ten thousand gold coins right now! If you can't do that, then shut up and watch!"
At my thunderous outburst, the marquis lowered his head, his face beet red, and said no more. The plaza was completely my stage.
Klaus and Erich watched the entire spectacle from just behind the stage, holding their breath.
Erich's eyes were shining as he scribbled in a ledger he held in one hand. His brain was probably working at full capacity at this very moment.
"Marvelous... Truly, truly marvelous business acumen... The sales have already far exceeded our initial projections... Ah, with these abundant funds, I can resume that frozen research project. We can also begin work on the flood control project..."
He muttered to himself, gazing at the numbers being recorded in the ledger with an ecstatic expression. To him, they were not just a string of numbers. They were the very light of hope that would save the country's future.
Klaus, on the other hand, was simply staring at me with a complex expression.
(...Is this really the same Lady Alicia who was said to be selfish, arrogant, and heartless?)
What crossed his mind was pure, bottomless confusion. The princess who was supposed to have thought of the common people as less than insects on the roadside was now raising her voice for them. The princess who was supposed to have been interested only in adorning herself was now, with her hair in disarray and unafraid of getting dirty, pleading for the country's future until her voice was hoarse.
The word "amnesia" was not nearly enough to explain it. It was as if her very soul had been swapped with someone else's.
My form on the stage, standing my ground against seasoned merchants without yielding an inch, was hardly what one would call graceful. In fact, one might even call it rough, boorish, and ill-mannered.
But her profile, damp with sweat, looked more serious, more powerful, and for some reason, terribly beautiful, than any of the dazzling dresses he had ever seen her in.
(...I may have been gravely mistaken about her.)
Klaus had not yet realized that a warm feeling he had never experienced before was quietly but surely beginning to sprout deep within his own chest.
By the time the frenzied auction ended and the setting sun dyed the entire plaza a gentle orange, the mountain of treasures that had been piled up so high had completely disappeared.
In my hands were several heavy bags filled with gold coins. Their weight spoke more eloquently than anything of the day's success.
"Hah... I'm exhausted..."
I collapsed onto the spot and wiped the sweat from my brow with my arm. My throat was sore and my voice was raspy. My body felt as heavy as lead, and even moving a single finger was a chore.
But strangely, my heart felt clear and bright. A sense of accomplishment and a definite feeling of progress gave vitality to my tired body.
"The first step is somehow complete."
I hugged the bags of gold coins tightly and smiled with satisfaction. Klaus just watched me in silence. I myself had no way of knowing yet that the light in his eyes had begun to take on a slightly different, gentler color than it had just a few days ago.
