2.hazy house

　“​Nina...​Nina...!”

　Somebody was calling the girl. Nina opened her eyes, and she saw a woman from the distorted window frame.

　“Mom...!”
　
　As soon as Nina crawled on hands and knees and got out from a crack of the window frame, she clung to her mother. Dark clouds gathered in the sky and a dense fog lay all around. They were on the ranch where the bus had crashed.

　“How are the other students...Mom?”

　“I couldn’t find any survivors. Anyway, Let’s go to the house over there and talk to the owner of the ranch about the accident.” 

　Jayne said. Nina looked carefully in the direction Jayne pointed, and she found a hazy house in the fog.

　“OK...” 

　Nina said. She started to walk hand in hand with Jayne toward the house. Without her noticing, her hands became icy cold.​ It started raining. When they arrived in front of the house, a tall chestnut tree growing in a garden of the house was swaying from side to side in the rain.

　“Excuse me? Is there anybody here?” 

　Jayne said while knocking on the front door. The door opened and a big dog with glossy black hair was sitting on the entrance floor and as soon as it saw ​her​, it climbed the stairway. 

　Suddenly, there was a loud bang and a flash of lightning illuminated them. ​Nina’s shadow lengthened on the floor. ​She let out a slight cry and entered the house. They closed the door, then looked around the room slowly. 

　The light in the kitchen had been left on, dishes were left in the sink. A half read newspaper and a cup of coffee was at the dining table. The light at the stairs toward the second floor had also been left on. 


　But, the house showed no sign of life.
