失敗博士と見習い魔女（Doc and Dot）

第1話 クシャミで大変身！（The Sneeze-Change Potion!）

それは科学も魔法もある、こことは別の世界。
This is a world where both science and magic exist, a world different from ours.

今日も学校の庭では、見習い魔女の女の子、ドットが一生懸命に杖を振っていました。
Today, in the school garden, Dot, a trainee witch, was enthusiastically waving her wand.

そばでは、お友達のアイビーが、小鳥たちと楽しそうにお話しをしています。
Next to her, her friend Ivy was happily talking with the little birds.

「よーし、見ててね！　今日こそ動物に変身する魔法を成功させるんだから！」
"Alright, watch me! I'm going to successfully cast the animal transformation spell today!"

ドットは気合を入れて、杖をビュンと振りました。
Dot gathered her energy and swung her wand with a swoosh.

「魔法まぜまぜ大変身！　かわいいネコにな～れ！　エイッ！」
"Magic Mix, Great Change! Turn into a cute cat! Take that!"

ボフンと白い煙があがって、少しずつドットの体が見えてきますが……あれ？　特に体が変わっているようには見えません。
A puff of white smoke rose, and Dot's body gradually became visible... but wait? She didn't look particularly changed.

でも、頭の上には「ネコの耳」、お尻からは「イヌのシッポ」が生えていました。
However, she had "cat ears" on her head and a "dog tail" growing from her bottom.

「ドット、それは……なんの動物なの？」
"Dot, is that... what animal is that?"

アイビーはそれを見て、困った顔で首をかしげます。
Ivy looked at her, tilting her head with a perplexed expression.

ちょうど近くで見ていた学校の先生も、あきれた顔でため息をつきました。
The school teacher, who happened to be watching nearby, sighed with a look of exasperation.

「ドット、また失敗ですね。おうちでしっかり練習してきなさい」
"Dot, another failure. Go home and practice properly."

「はーい……」
"Okay..."

ドットはイヌのシッポをシュンと下げて、小さく返事をしました。
Dot drooped her dog tail and replied meekly.

トボトボと家に帰っていくドットを、アイビーは手を振って見送ります。
Ivy waved goodbye as Dot trudged home.

「もう、魔法なんて難しくて嫌になっちゃう！　博士、どうにかしてよ～」
"Ugh, magic is too hard and frustrating! Doc, do something about it~"

家に帰ったドットは、お父さんでもある博士に相談しました。
When Dot got home, she consulted with Doc, who was also her father.

すると、それを聞いた博士がニカッと笑って、棚から何かを取り出します。
Hearing this, Doc grinned and took something out from a shelf.

「ハハハ！　それなら、ちょうどいい発明があるよ！」
"Ha ha ha! In that case, I have just the invention for you!"

博士の手には、キラキラ光る青い液体が入った瓶。
In Doc's hand was a bottle with a sparkling blue liquid.

その名も『クシャミ変身薬』！
Its name: The Sneeze-Change Potion!

「これを飲んで、なりたい動物を思い浮かべながらクシャミをするんだ。魔法よりずっと簡単だろう？」
"Drink this, think of the animal you want to become, and sneeze. It'll be much easier than magic, right?"

「わあ、すごい！　博士、ありがとう！」
"Wow, that's amazing! Thank you, Doc!"

ドットはすぐにその青い薬をゴクゴクと飲み干しました。
Dot immediately gulped down the blue potion.

そして、近くにあった羽ペンをつかむと、自分の鼻をコチョコチョ……。
Then, grabbing a nearby quill, she tickled her own nose...

「ネコにな～れ！　ハ、ハ、ハックション！」
"Turn into a cat! H-H-Achoo!"

ボフンと白い煙があがって、少しずつドットの体が見えてくると……今度こそちゃんと、モコモコの可愛い黒猫に変身していました！
A puff of white smoke rose, and as Dot's body gradually became visible... this time, she had successfully transformed into a fluffy, adorable black cat!

「ニャー！（わあ！　大成功！）」
"Meow! (Wow! Great success!)"

黒猫になったドットは大喜び。
Dot, now a black cat, was overjoyed.

嬉しくなって、そのまま外へ飛び出しました。
Excitedly, she dashed outside.

学校に戻ると、アイビーの後ろから突然現れてビックリさせたり。
Back at school, she suddenly appeared from behind Ivy, startling her.

高い塀の上をタタタッと軽やかに走ったり、先生のスカートの下をササッとくぐり抜けたり。
She pitter-pattered lightly on top of a high wall, and zipped under the teacher's skirt.

ドットは猫の姿をすっかり気に入って、大はしゃぎしました。
Dot completely fell in love with the cat form and was having a blast.

「ニャニャー（たくさん動いたら、少しお腹が空いてきたなー）」
"Meow meow (I ran so much, I'm a little hungry now~)"

いつもより小さな足でたくさん走ったドットは、今ならつまみ食いしても見つからないかもと、レストランのキッチンにソロリソロリ……。
Having run a lot with her smaller-than-usual paws, Dot thought she might be able to sneak some food now and crept stealthily into a restaurant kitchen...

テーブルに運ばれる前の作りたての美味しそうな魚料理を見つけて、よだれを垂らしました。
She found a delicious-looking, freshly-cooked fish dish that was about to be served and drooled.

「コラッ！　そこで何をしている！」
"Hey! What are you doing there!"

でも、料理に手を伸ばそうとしたところで、怖い顔をしたシェフに見つかって大変！
But just as she reached for the food, the scary-faced chef spotted her—what a disaster!

ビックリしたドットは、慌てて逃げようとして、テーブルの上の缶にぶつかってしまいました。
Startled, Dot rushed to escape and bumped into a can on the table.

ガシャンと音を立てて倒れたのは、なんとコショウの缶！
With a crash, the can that fell over was none other than pepper!

フタが開いていた缶の中からたくさんのコショウが舞い上がって……。
Lots of pepper dust flew up from the open can... and into Dot's nose.

「ハ、ハ、ハックション！」
"H-H-Achoo!"

なりたい動物のことを考える時間もないままクシャミをすると、ドットの体はどんどん大きく膨らんで、長い鼻に大きな体のゾウになってしまいました！
Before she could even think of the animal she wanted to become, she sneezed, and Dot's body swelled up bigger and bigger, transforming her into a large elephant with a long trunk!

ドッシーンとお店のドアを壊しながら、なんとかレストランから逃げ出しますが、クシャミはまだまだ止まりません。
CRASHING through the restaurant door, she managed to escape, but the sneezing still wouldn't stop.

「ハックション！　ハックション！」
"Achoo! Achoo!"

首の長いキリンに変身してお店の看板に頭をぶつけてしまったり、カメになって公園の階段をゴロゴロと転がったり。
She transformed into a long-necked giraffe, bumping her head into a shop sign, and then a turtle, tumbling down the park stairs.

一秒ごとに違う動物に変身しては、その場所で物が壊れる音や、驚いた人の声が聞こえてきました。
Changing into a different animal every second, the sounds of things breaking and people's startled screams could be heard everywhere she went.

「コケコッコー！（ごめんなさい！　ただクシャミが止まらないだけなの！）」
"Cock-a-doodle-doo! (I'm sorry! I just can't stop sneezing!)"

ドットは街の人たちに謝りますが、普通の人に動物が言っている言葉は分かりません。
Dot apologized to the townspeople, but ordinary people couldn't understand what the animals were saying.

街中はあっという間にパニックになって、お巡りさんまで追いかけてきてしまいました。
The town quickly turned into a panic, and even the police started chasing her.

でも、この街で一人だけ、ドットのお友達のアイビーは、植物や動物の声が分かります。
However, there was one person in this town who could understand the voices of plants and animals: Dot's friend, Ivy.

「ピー！　ピー！（大変！　大変！　ドット！　街で大暴れ！）」
"Peep! Peep! (Oh no! Oh no! Dot is running wild in the town!)"

「ドットが？　大変！」
"Dot is? That's terrible!"

学校からの帰り道、飛んできた小鳥から話を聞いたアイビーは、急いで博士のところへ行きました。
On her way home from school, Ivy, who had heard the story from a little bird, rushed to Doc's place.

「それは大変だ！」
"That's a serious problem!"

そして話を聞いた博士は、変身を治すキャンディを持って、アイビーと一緒に急いで走り出します。
Doc, having heard the story, grabbed the candy that cancels the transformation and quickly ran out with Ivy.

大騒ぎの街の中、小鳥の案内でやっとドットを見つけた、博士とアイビー。
In the chaotic town, guided by the little bird, Doc and Ivy finally found Dot.

そこでは、大きな口を開けたワニに変身したドットが、お巡りさんに追いかけられていました！
There, Dot, transformed into a crocodile with its mouth wide open, was being chased by the police!

「わわっ、ちょっと待って～！」
"Whoa, wait a minute!"

博士はポケットから慌てて変身を治すキャンディを取り出すと、ワニの口へポイッ！
Doc frantically pulled the transformation-canceling candy out of his pocket and flicked it into the crocodile's mouth!

それをパクッと食べたドットから、ボフンと白い煙が出ると、ようやく人間の女の子の姿に戻りました。
When Dot, who had chomped on it, let out a puff of white smoke, she finally returned to the form of a human girl.

「ごめんなさい……」
"I'm sorry..."

ドットはションボリして、博士と一緒にお巡りさんや街の人に謝りました。
Dot looked downcast and apologized to the police and the townspeople with Doc.

そして、アイビーにお礼を言ってから、二人でお家に帰ります。
Then, after thanking Ivy, the two went home.

夕焼けの中、博士はドットに聞きました。
In the setting sun, Doc asked Dot,

「そういえばドット、どうして動物になる魔法なんて習おうと思ったんだい？」
"By the way, Dot, why did you want to learn the animal transformation magic?"

そしてドットは、少し照れくさそうに答えます。
And Dot replied, a little bashfully,

「だって……この前博士が、『猫の手も借りたいくらい忙しい』って言ってたから」
"Because... Doc said the other day, 'I'm so busy, even a cat could help me right now.'"

それを聞いた博士は、目を丸くして、それから優しく笑いました。
Doc, upon hearing this, widened his eyes and then smiled gently.

「そうだったのか。ありがとう、ドット。でもね……」
"Is that so? Thank you, Dot. But you see..."

博士はドットの頭をポンポンと撫でます。
Doc patted Dot's head.

「僕が借りたいのは、猫の手じゃなくて、ドットの手だよ。君がそのままの姿で手伝ってくれたら、僕は一番嬉しいんだ」
"The hands I want to borrow are not a cat's, but Dot's hands. I'm happiest when you help me just as you are."

「えへへ、わかった！」
"Hehe, okay!"

次の日から、ドットは魔法や薬に頼らず、自分の手で博士のお手伝いをするようになりました。
From the next day, Dot began helping Doc with her own hands, without relying on magic or potions.

大切なのは、難しい魔法の言葉じゃなくて、相手を思う素直な言葉だったんですね。
The important thing was not difficult magic words, but honest words and thoughtfulness toward others.
