失敗博士と見習い魔女（Doc and Dot）

第2話 ドーナツの足跡？（The Walking Donut?）

それは科学も魔法もある、こことは別の世界。
This is a world where both science and magic exist, a world different from ours.

図書室の窓から差し込む午後の光の中で、見習い魔女のドットは困っていました。
In the afternoon light from the library window, Dot, the trainee witch, was in trouble.

「……これ、今日中に終わるわけないよー」
"...I can't finish all of this today!"

目の前には、図書室に返された本のとても大きな山。
In front of her was a very big mountain of returned books.

今日の授業で「お掃除の魔法」に失敗して、教室をめちゃくちゃにしてしまったドットへの罰当番です。
It was her punishment for messing up the classroom with a failed "cleaning spell" in class.

ふと見ると、図書室の隅で同級生のガスが、山のようなドーナツをモグモグと食べていました。
Looking over, she saw her classmate Gus in the corner, munching on a mountain of donuts.

「ねえガス、図書室は飲食禁止だよ？」
"Hey Gus, you're not allowed to eat in the library, you know?"

ドットが注意すると、ガスはおっとりとした話し方で答えました。
Dot warned him, and Gus answered in his slow, calm voice.

「それはそうだけど、僕は魔法を使うとすごくお腹が空くから、特別に良いって言われてるんだよ。ここは静かにおやつを食べるのにはもってこいの場所だしね」
"That's true, but magic makes me so hungry, so I have special permission. Besides, this is the perfect place for a quiet snack."

「ふーん、魔法も楽じゃないんだね」
"Hmm, I guess magic isn't easy either."

ドットは感心しましたが、すぐに自分の本の山を振り返ります。
Dot was impressed, but she quickly turned back to her mountain of books.

「よーし、私も魔法でパパッと片付けちゃうもんね！　魔法まぜまぜ、本棚へゴー！　エイッ！」
"Alright, I'll clean this up in a flash with magic! Magic mix, go to the shelves! Yah!"

杖を振ると、本たちがバタバタと鳥のように羽ばたき始めます。
She waved her wand, and the books began to flap their covers like birds.

ところが、鳥のようになった本たちは、図書室中をグルグルと飛び回るだけで、棚に戻ろうとしているようにはみえません。
But the bird-like books just flew round and round the library, and they didn't look like they were going back to the shelves at all.

「もう！　やっぱり魔法はダメ！　博士、助けて～！」
"Oh no! Magic is no good after all! Doc, help me~!"

ドットは一度家に帰り、父親である博士に相談しました。
Dot went home and asked her father, Doc, for help.

「ハハハ！　それならいいものがあるぞ、ドット。これぞ最新発明『足生え光線銃』だ！」
ha ha! In that case, I have just the thing, Dot. This is my latest invention, the 'Leg-Growing Ray Gun'!"

博士が取り出したのは、ピカピカ光る銃型の道具。
Doc pulled out a shiny, gun-shaped gadget.

「これを撃てば、どんな物にも足が生えるから。きっと本たちは棚に自分で歩いて戻るはずさ。魔法よりずっと賢いだろう？」
"If you shoot this, legs will grow on anything. I’m sure the books will walk back to the shelves by themselves. Much smarter than magic, right?"

「わあ、すごい！　博士、ありがとう！」
"Wow, amazing! Thank you, Doc!"

ドットはさっそく図書室に戻り、本の山に向かって光線を放ちました。
Dot rushed back to the library and fired the ray at the mountain of books.

「えいっ、えいっ、えいっ！」
"Zap, zap, zap!"

ポコン！ポコン！と、本にニョキニョキと細い足が生えていきます。
Pop! Pop! Thin little legs grew out of the books.

「みんな、自分の棚に戻って～」
"Everyone, go back to your shelves~"

ドットの声に、足が生えた本たちは従います。
The books with legs followed Dot's voice.

自分ひとりで図書室の中を歩き回り、自分が元居た場所を見つけると、そこに向けて飛び込んでいきました。
They walked around the library all by themselves, found their original spots, and hopped right in.

「すごーい！　本当に自分で元の場所に戻っていく！」
"Wonderful! They're really going back to their places by themselves!"

しかし、そう安心したのもつかの間、足の生えた本たちは、次第に自分勝手に動き始めました。
But she didn't feel happy for long. The books with legs slowly started to do whatever they wanted.

歴史の本が料理の棚へ行ったり、図鑑が植物のページを開いて、その植物を実際に見ようと窓の外へ飛び出したり。
A history book went to the cooking shelf, and a picture book opened its plant pages and jumped out the window to see real plants.

「待って待って！　戻ってきて！」
"Wait, wait! Come back!"

ドットは慌てて光線銃を連射しました。しかし……。
Dot frantically fired the ray gun again and again. But…

「あ、あれ？　銃が熱い……」
"Oh, wait? The gun is getting hot..."

ビカビカッ！　ボンッ！！
Flash! Boom!!

光線銃を連射しすぎたのか、とても熱くなってしまった銃が爆発し、光線が色々な方向に飛び散りました。
The gun had become so hot from firing too much that it exploded, and the rays splashed in every direction.

その光線が当たった植木、椅子、机……そして、ガスが食べようとしていたドーナツにまで足が生え、みんないっぺんにトコトコと走り出したのです！
The rays hit plants, chairs, desks... and even the donuts Gus was about to eat. Suddenly, everything started trotting away!

「……あ」
"...Oh."

ガスは困った顔で、逃げていくドーナツを見つめます。
Gus looked troubled as he watched his donuts run away.

「ドット。僕のドーナツが散歩に出かけちゃった。これは作った人にお金を払ってもらわないと困るなぁ」
"Dot. My donuts have gone for a walk. I'll need the person who made this to pay me back."

ガスは近くを通った「足の生えたドーナツ」を一匹ひょいと捕まえました。
Gus quickly snatched one "donut with legs" that was passing by.

「君、出て行ってもいいけど、代わりのドーナツをもらいたいから……僕の代わりに博士を呼んできてくれる？」
"You can go, but I want a new donut... so could you go call Doc for me?"

ドーナツは「プスン」と返事をするように跳ねると、そのまま博士の研究所へと駆けていきます。
The donut hopped as if to say "Okay!" and ran straight to Doc's lab.

研究所で別の実験をしていた博士の元に、トコトコと一匹のドーナツがやってきました。
In the lab, while Doc was working on another experiment, a little donut came trotting in.

「……ん？足の生えたドーナツ？　喋れないようだが……さては私の発明がまた何かやらかしたな！」
"...Hmm? A donut with legs? It can't talk, but... I bet my invention messed up again!"

博士はすぐに何があったか気づいて、『足を戻す煙噴射機』を抱えて学校へ急ぎました。
Doc realized what happened right away, grabbed his "Leg-Shrinking Smoke Sprayer," and rushed to the school.

「よし、伝言ありがとう。君も元に戻してあげよう」
"Alright, thanks for the message. Let's turn you back too."

博士はドーナツの足を消すと、そのドーナツを口にくわえながら図書室へ駆け込みます。
Doc made the donut's legs disappear and ran into the library with the donut in his mouth.

図書室は大混乱。いいえ、図書室だけでなく、歩き回る本や植物で学校中が大パニックです。
The library was a mess. No, not just the library—the whole school was in a panic with books and plants walking everywhere.

「博士！　早くなんとかして！」
"Doc! Do something, quick!"

「ドット、これを持って走るんだ！　でも……」
"Dot, take this and run! But..."

博士は噴射機を構えましたが、弱り顔です。
Doc held up the sprayer, but he looked worried.

「この機械のちからじゃ、学校中を走り回る間に日が暮れてしまうぞ」
"With only this machine's power, the sun will go down before we can run through the whole school."

そこで、隣で冷静に見ていたガスが口を開きました。
Then, Gus, who was watching calmly, spoke up.

「……だったら、その噴射機に、勝手に動き回ってもらえばいいんじゃないかな」
"...Then, why don't you let the sprayer move around on its own?"

「でもガス、光線銃は壊れちゃったし、歩く速さじゃ追いつかないよ！」
"But Gus, the ray gun is broken, and walking isn't fast enough to catch them!"

ドットが言うと、ガスはドットの杖を指さします。
When Dot said that, Gus pointed to her wand.

「そうじゃないよ。すぐ近くに、物を自由な鳥のようにグルグル飛び回らせることができる魔法使いがいるじゃないか」
"Not like that. There is a witch right here who can make things fly around like free birds."

「……あ！　私のこと！？」
"...Oh! You mean me!?"

ドットは勇気をもらって、博士の噴射機に魔法をかけました。
Feeling brave, Dot cast a spell on Doc's sprayer.

「魔法まぜまぜ、飛び回れ噴射機！　エイッ！」
"Magic mix, fly away sprayer! Yah!"

今度は大成功！　噴射機は煙を吐き出しながら、空飛ぶ龍のように校内をビュンビュンと飛び回りました。
This time it was a great success! The sprayer puffed out smoke and zoomed through the school like a flying dragon.

煙を浴びた本や家具は、次々と足を消して元の静かな物に戻っていきます。
As the smoke hit the books and furniture, their legs disappeared one by one, and they turned back into quiet objects.

夕暮れ時。
At sunset.

先生にしっかりと怒られたドットは、博士と一緒に、今度こそ自分の手で本を一冊ずつ棚に戻し始めました。
After getting a good scolding from the teacher, Dot and Doc began putting the books back on the shelves one by one with their own hands.

「はぁ……。魔法も科学も大変。やっぱり手でやるのが一番だけど、これ、夜中までかかるかも……」
"Whew... Magic and science are hard work. Using my hands is best after all, but this might take until midnight..."

ドットがため息をついた、その時です。
Just as Dot let out a sigh…

「……一人でやるのは大変だけど、四人ならすぐ終わるよ」
"...Doing it alone is hard, but with four people, we'll finish in no time."

声がして振り返ると、そこにはガスと、小鳥を連れたアイビーが立っていました。
She heard a voice and turned around to see Gus and Ivy with her little birds.

「みんな！　手伝ってくれるの？」
"Everyone! You're going to help?"

「うん。ドットが困ってるって、小鳥さんが教えてくれたから」
"Yes. The little birds told me you were in trouble, Dot."

アイビーは優しく笑います。
Ivy smiled gently.

「……僕も、おやつの時間を邪魔されたくないからね」
"...And I don't want my snack time to be interrupted anymore."

ガスも少し照れくさそうに言いました。
Gus said, looking a bit shy.

ドットは胸がポカポカ温かくなるのを感じました。
Dot felt a warm glow in her heart.

「ありがとう！　みんな大好き！」
"Thank you! I love you all!"

大切なのは、難しい魔法の言葉じゃなくて、友達に『手伝って』と頼める素直な言葉だったんですね。
The important thing wasn't difficult magic words, but the simple, honest words to ask friends for help.
