Episode 5: The Uncommunicative Beast
しおりを挟むJuly arrived, and the long rainy season came to an abrupt end, as if it had burned itself out. The sky, as if its moodiness until yesterday had been a lie, was dyed a single shade of blue—impossibly high, deep, and almost violent. The sun baked the ground without mercy. Heat shimmer rose from the asphalt, distorting the distant scenery like a mirage.
The old air conditioner in the office was groaning, desperately trying to pump out cool air, but it was no match for the midsummer sun pouring through the window. The searing light, which felt like it was grilling my skin, drew a bright rectangle on the floor. From outside, the chorus of cicadas, as if they were crying out with all their might, rained down like a waterfall. Their furious chirping seemed to pass right through the office walls and echo directly in the core of my mind.
"So hot... I think I'm melting..."
Misora was sprawled across the table, completely spent. Her trademark energy was useless against this murderous heat. Even Saki's presence, over in the corner of the room, felt wilted. The air around her occasionally wavered, so much so that I nearly mistook it for a heat haze rather than a poltergeist.
Ever since the incident at the shrine, a somewhat awkward atmosphere had settled between Misora and me. A decade-long feeling. A strange fate. Ever since I learned that the emotions she held for me were not just a simple "crush" at first sight, but something much deeper, I'd had no idea how to manage the distance between us. The more conscious I became of it, the more brusque my words and colder my attitude grew. Misora, sensitive to my mood, began to look lonely more often. The summer heat only made the awkwardness more suffocating.
What cut through that stagnant air was the impersonal ring of the telephone. The number was blocked. Frowning, I picked up the receiver.
"...Kamiyama."
"...This is Kirishima, from the Metropolitan Police."
The voice that came from the other end was a low, suppressed male voice. At the word "police," Misora's head snapped up.
"This is an unofficial, confidential request. Your father helped me out a few times."
The man calling himself Kirishima began to speak in a flat, yet urgent tone.
There was a massive abandoned factory in the bay district. For the past few months, there had been a rash of incidents where trespassers had met with mysterious accidents. Serious injuries from falling objects, accidents where people were caught in machinery. And to top it all off, two police officers who went inside to investigate were found in a state of delirium. He said they were both screaming incomprehensibly and had been committed to a closed psychiatric ward.
"...That's my area of expertise," I answered quietly after hearing him out. This was clearly different in "quality" from our previous cases. This wasn't a ghost born from some individual's lingering regrets or attachments—the kind you could "dialogue" with. This was something purer, and filled with malice.
"Please. We can't make this public. But if we leave it, the number of victims will only grow. You'll be well compensated."
"Understood. Send me the location."
Hanging up, I stood. Every cell in my body was screaming danger. This was a battle.
"Master, was that just now..."
"A big one. Misora, you and Saki wait here at the office. That's an order."
I commanded her in a tone that brooked no argument.
"No."
But Misora shook her head decisively. She pushed herself up from the table and looked me straight in the eye. Her gaze held none of its usual innocence; a strong light of determination shone within it.
"I'm going too. I'm your assistant, and your partner."
"Don't be ridiculous! This isn't a game! You could die!"
"I know! That's why I have to go! I can't just sit here and wait while you go to a dangerous place all by yourself!"
At her words, Saki's presence in the corner wavered strongly, as if in agreement.
I clicked my tongue. Their resolve was apparently firmer than I thought.
"...Fine. But you will follow my instructions to the letter. If I think it's getting even slightly dangerous, you run immediately. Got it?"
"...Yes!"
With a deep sigh, I retrieved a black attaché case I kept stored in the back of the office. Inside were the real "weapons" I rarely used.
◇
We drove out and arrived at the coastal industrial zone. In the sky, a massive thunderhead sat enthroned like a castle reaching for the heavens. The sea breeze carried the smell of rusted iron and salt. The abandoned factory we were looking for lay sprawled across the barren landscape like the carcass of a giant, discarded beast.
"It's huge..." Misora gasped.
The fence surrounding the property was torn in places, and weeds had pushed through the cracks in the asphalt, growing to waist height. The harsh midsummer sun reflected off the factory's rusted tin roof, searing my eyes. *Jiri-jiri, jiri-jiri.* The incessant cry of the cicadas here sounded like an eerie warning, heralding the tragedy that was about to begin.
The moment we set foot on the property, the air changed. A chill caressed my skin, making the oppressive heat outside feel like a lie. But it wasn't a pleasant coolness. It was the lifeless, inorganic cold of sticking your head in a refrigerator. And I could feel it. A presence of intense malice and hatred, far beyond any spirit I had encountered before. It wasn't directed at anyone in particular. It was a pure mass of destructive impulse, seeking only to destroy and devour everything in its path.
"...This is a beast," I muttered. There wasn't one chance in ten thousand for dialogue.
"Misora, Saki. Get back to the car. That's an order."
"But...!"
"Just go! If you're here, you'll only be in the way!"
I deliberately threw the cold, dismissive words at her. Misora bit her lip, her face twisting in frustration, but she must have seen the genuine seriousness in my eyes. She nodded without another word and, seeming to urge Saki's presence along, ran back toward the car.
With the two of them (and one spirit) safe, I stood alone before the factory's enormous iron doors. I opened the attaché case and took out a short sword made of purified metal and a tightly coiled steel wire. Then, clamping several paper talismans between my fingers, I took a deep, deep breath.
*Kill your emotions. Stop your thoughts. Focus every nerve only on eliminating the enemy before you.*
I had become the Ghost Buster, Jin Kamiyama.
◇
The inside of the factory was wrapped in a graveyard silence. Parts of the ceiling had caved in, and the light that streamed through created shafts of light on the floor, like stained glass in a church. Countless dust motes danced slowly in the light. The smells of machine oil, mold, and a thick scent of iron hit my nose.
The presence was swirling in the center of this vast space.
I drew my short sword and advanced slowly toward the middle.
Suddenly, the space before me warped. A darkness. A shapeless, formless darkness began to seep out of thin air. It was the final result of the grudges of multiple workers who had died in accidents at this factory, fused over long years, leaving only pure "hatred" and "destructive impulse."
"...Ghh... AAAAAAAAGH!"
It wasn't a voice or a sound, but a shriek that felt like it was tearing directly at my eardrums. The darkness writhed, and a part of it extended like a tentacle, grabbing a rusted iron pipe lying on the floor and hurling it at me with incredible speed.
"Tch!"
I ducked to avoid it. The pipe embedded itself in the wall behind me, sending fragments of concrete flying.
There wasn't a moment to spare. One after another, the surrounding rubble and scrap metal were launched like bullets by the power of the darkness. I dodged them by a hair's breadth, sometimes deflecting them with my short sword, as I slowly closed the distance.
"—On kirikiri basara un hatta!"
Chanting the mantra at high speed, I threw the steel wire. The purified wire passed through the dark body as if to slice it, but the darkness regenerated instantly. Unless I destroyed its core, it would revive again and again.
The battle was fierce.
The darkness split open like a giant mouth and unleashed a shockwave that seemed to be a condensation of resentful voices. I slammed a talisman onto the floor at my feet, deploying a spiritual barrier to block it. The high-pitched clang of metal on metal, the low groan of space warping, and my own ragged breathing were the only sounds that echoed through the massive factory.
How much time had passed? My stamina, and my concentration, were nearing their limits.
It was then.
"...Master!"
Misora's voice echoed in my head. No, that wasn't right. It was Saki's voice.
I glanced toward the factory entrance and saw Misora and Saki standing there. Why were they here? They were supposed to be waiting in the car.
"You idiot! Why did you come back!"
"Because, Master, you...!"
For the single moment my attention was diverted to them, the beast did not miss its chance.
From within the darkness, the thickest, sharpest tentacle yet shot out, not toward me, but toward the entrance where Misora and Saki stood.
"—Damn it!"
My body moved before I could think. I leaped in front of Misora and Saki, shoving them aside, and took the dark tentacle with my own body.
"Guh... AAAAAAAGH!"
A searing, gouging pain shot through my left arm. I heard the sound of my bones creaking. The dark tentacle didn't pierce my arm, but its evil energy began to eat away at my flesh and bone.
But it was also an opportunity. Its main body was wide open.
"...Saki!" I yelled, enduring the pain. "Distract it! Just for a second!"
As if sensing my intent, Saki's presence trembled with fear but nodded firmly. The next instant, a giant iron hook near the factory ceiling began to swing with a deafening clang. It was Saki's life-or-death poltergeist.
The darkness turned its attention to the hook on the ceiling, just for a moment.
That fraction-of-a-second opening.
"—This ends now!"
I poured all my remaining strength into my right hand and thrust the short sword, imbued with a final mantra, into the especially dense core at the center of the darkness.
"GYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!"
The beast let out a final, agonizing scream. Its body was burned from the inside by the light of purification and instantly dissipated into mist.
All that remained was silence and the smell of rusted machine oil.
And at the same time, my consciousness faded to black.
◇
When I came to, I was lying in the back seat of the car. Misora was in the driver's seat. Sometime while I was out, a heavy evening shower had begun. The sound of the downpour hammered against the car's roof.
"...Master! Are you awake!?"
Misora turned around, her face stained with tears.
My left arm was wrapped in a bandage, clumsily but tightly tied, likely by her. A hot, throbbing pain continued.
"I'm sorry... It's my fault... Because I came back..."
As she shed large teardrops, I shook my head.
"...It's not your fault. I did what I did."
It was true. In that moment, I had been relieved, from the bottom of my heart, that I had been able to protect Misora.
"...That's why I told you," I said, my breath ragged. "This is what happens when you get involved with me. Quit. You should have a normal, safe life."
These were my true feelings. I didn't want to put her in danger anymore.
But Misora wiped her tears away with the back of her hand and met my gaze straight on in the rearview mirror. There was no longer any hesitation in her eyes.
"No. I won't quit," she said clearly.
"Because I'm your partner, Master. I understood that clearly today. It's not enough for me to just be protected. I have to get stronger... strong enough to fight alongside you."
I couldn't say anything back to that.
This wasn't about a crush, or admiration, or any other half-baked emotion. She had made her decision. She was prepared to accept everything about me—the light and the dark.
I said nothing, simply watching the scenery flow by outside the window. A road after the rain. The car's headlights illuminated the wet asphalt, stretching out endlessly.
*This has gotten complicated,* I muttered to myself.
But I knew I couldn't possibly let go of this girl who had made her resolve.
