Mysterious Stranger
しおりを挟むThe year is 2038.
Human civilization has finally begun to flourish, a long journey leading it to a carefree future. Machines were actively replacing humans, freeing them from hard, dirty work and allowing most to find high-paying professions. The percentage of people suffering from poverty and hunger began to decline, as did the number of people dying from disease. Everything pointed to an ideal life that seemed to be becoming a reality.
However...
A disease of unknown origin began to spread to all corners of the planet, engulfing a large part of the population with an epidemic. The survivors built quarantine zones, which were named "gardens." Their goal is to rescue the survivors and protect them from the virus. Currently, scientists from all over the world are working hard to find a cure, and the organization is striving to grow a new species of humanity that is resistant to the virus.
----
- Oh, oh, oh, it hurts, it really hurts...
- Wait, there's not much left.
The nurse abruptly pulled the needle out of the neck of the young man, who was moaning in pain.
- Well done, Patrick. You are the first brave man who came to my office.
- The others felt a little uneasy when you said that we were going to have injections now. I decided to support everyone.
- All children are afraid of injections like fire, because they've read all sorts of children's books and now they think it's painful and unpleasant.
- But it's really like that.
Patrick smiled.
- The first batch is usually the most painful, but don't think that now we will give you such huge injections. The remaining doses are three times less, and over time you will realize that this pain is more like a mosquito bite.
-I believe you.
-That's great. Then call the others. I don't want to delay the queue, because we're already behind schedule.
Patrick, confused, hurriedly got up from his chair and got tangled in his shoelaces, falling.
-Oh, Patrick. Are you okay?
The nurse laughed.
-Oh my God, you never change. Need some help?
- No, thanks, I can handle it myself. I'm sorry for the delay, I'll call the others now.
- Take your time.
- Come on in, who's next!
-Patrick, are you okay?
- Patrick, how painful is it for you, rate it on a scale of ten.
- Disperse, everyone! Patrick, are you really crying? It's just a an injection, and you're crying like a girl. How gentle you are.
—N-no, it's not like that! You're completely wrong in your opinion of me! - Patrick's voice was trembling with excitement, and tears glistened in his eyes.
—Ahah, did you hear what that crybaby said? - Minato laughed, raising his eyebrows with a mocking smile. — Personally, I'm not. He seems to have forgotten how to speak from shock!
-Minato, since you're so brave, why don't you follow Patrick? - Miku said, clenching her hands into fists, trying to keep her composure. — It doesn't hurt at all, and injections are just childish fears!
— Miku, let go!- He exclaimed, averting his gaze to hide his confusion.
-Chickened out? - She asked with a smirk, cocking her head to the side. — Well, which one of you is a girl now?
-I'm sorry, I forgot something in the hallway,- he muttered sheepishly, avoiding her gaze.
-Oh, of course, I take your word for it, - she replied sarcastically, crossing her arms over her chest. - Come on, let's go, I can even hold your hand if you want.
—No, Miku, don't, I'll do it myself, he said urgently, although there was panic in his voice.
—No, you're coming with me right now! — She said decisively.
—Okay, then we'll do it together,— he agreed, lifting his chin.
-Someone stop this audacious creature! She's holding me hostage! — he exclaimed, trying to give his words a joking tone.
-Darling, you will become my hostage as soon as I close this door,- she said with a smirk, causing him to have a mixed feeling of fear and admiration.
-I got it, I'm coming, - Minato said with obvious reluctance, entering the medical room.
-That would have been the case from the beginning, - one of the guys said with a slight grin.
The laughter of the group echoed through the room, creating a light atmosphere, but Minato, feeling that he was being laughed at, resentfully closed the door behind him. His angry footsteps could be heard from the hallway, and the other boys pressed against the door, trying to eavesdrop on what was going on.
-Do you hear that? - One of them asked in a whisper, pressing his ear to the door.
-Yes, - the second answered, trying not to smile.
-Are you sure it won't hurt? - Minato spoke with a nervous intonation, his voice trembling with anticipation.
-Just a little bit, - the nurse replied confidently, smiling at Minato.
-No, I don't believe you,- Minato snaps, resisting the proximity to the table with all her might.
-Sit down! - The nurse insists, looking at him patiently.
- No! - He growled, stepping back.
— I said, sit down! - She said it sternly, but there was still a note of understanding in her voice.
—Oh, no, no, - he said. Minato exclaimed, straightening his shoulders and trying to look more confident than he really felt.
In the hallway, his friends exchanged glances, barely able to contain their laughter. They knew that Minato had always disliked injections, and this moment when his self-confidence cracked was a funny sight.
-Imagine that an injection is just a mosquito injection, - one of them muttered through the door.
Minato looked at the nurse in panic, expecting the pressure to drop, but she just took the injection and smiled.
-Just a little prick, Minato. And you can leave with the sweets.
-He really screams worse than a girl, - one of the observers chuckled softly, genuinely amused by Minato's reaction.
-What a fool he is, - said another, shaking his head.
Meanwhile, while the others were cheerfully discussing Minato's "exploits," the calmest member of the group, Kyo, was busy with something else entirely. He was sitting in the corner of the hallway, bent over his notebook. His pencil slides quickly over the paper, outlining the details of the drawing. Kyo focused on the latest edits, occasionally looking up from his work to take a look at what was happening in the medical room.
— Hi, Kyo! - Someone from the group called out to him. - Don't you want to hear him scream?
Kyo just grinned and went back to his drawing.
—Yes, it's funny, - he replied, without taking his eyes off the paper. - But I'd rather mind my own business.
The most ordinary scene in the medical room was turning into a real comedy, and Kyo wasn't going to miss it. He knew that when it was all over, his friends would gather in class again, and then his art could inspire them to a new wave of jokes.
-Wait a minute, - one of the guys said, coming closer to Kyo. - Do you really think he'll survive this?
-He'll survive, - Kyo replied confidently, adding the finishing touches to his drawing. — The main thing is that he does not lose consciousness from fear!
— Is there a new drawing again? - Asagi asked with interest, sitting down next to Kio.
-Yes...-He smiled a little sheepishly.
-What is it? - She continued, leaning closer to examine the details.
-I do not know, - said Kyo honestly, tracing the paper with a pencil.
-How can you draw something you don't know? - The girl raised her eyebrows in surprise, not believing her ears.
Kyo chuckled, sensing her genuine interest.
— Well, yes. This is a problem. I haven't named my masterpiece yet, but when I'm done, I'll definitely show it to you and you'll come up with a name for it.
-Really? - Her eyes were shining with surprise.
The girl looked away in embarrassment, blushing slightly with joy and intrigue.
-Promise? - she asked frankly, smiling dreamily.
Kyo was about to reply when another classmate snatched the paper from him, and he flinched in confusion.
-Wait, it's not over yet! - he exclaimed, trying to snatch the drawing from her.
—But I need to know what's painted here,— she giggled, coloring the black-and-white sheet with vivid emotions.
Kyo couldn't help but laugh when he saw the joyful expression on her face.
—Okay, okay, don't tear it up! — he said, rubbing his forehead. — This is my masterpiece, not nonsense!
Now several classmates gathered around and watched with interest.
— Yes, who knows what he painted! — One of them remarked laughing. - If only we could pull his tongue.
And then the attention of the whole group returned to Minato, who was still protesting in the medical room at that time.
— Wow, wow! Kyo, you've outdone yourself. Even now I won't be able to guess who is depicted here, - one of the classmates exclaimed, looking at the drawing in disbelief.
Two more classmates joined her, politely nudging each other.:
—Mm, is that the girl with the wolf ears? It's strange, I've never seen anything like it, - one suggested, squinting.
-I think it's a big gray wolf! — another one noted enthusiastically.
And then she playfully attacked her friend, while she was kicking and trying to escape from the embrace.
— Nooo... Not again! Please don't let it be it! I won't be able to sleep at night...- Hana was sobbing.
— Well, that's enough already. Carmen, you know that Hana is afraid of wolves,- someone from the group said, laughing.
-That's why I'm teasing her, - Carmen replied with a grin.
Hana continued, raising her hands in a defensive gesture, as if trying to push away an invisible monster.
-You should stop doing that. And you, Tori, give the drawing to Kyo immediately! With that, - Asagi snatched the paper from the girl's fragile hands.
-Asagi, are you serious? I'm not done yet! - Tori tried to return the drawing, but Asagi was adamant.
— It couldn't be more serious. Here you go, Kyo. And don't let anyone touch your stuff without permission, - Asagi said, handing the drawing back to Kyo.
Kyo nodded curtly, his face showing mixed feelings — gratitude to Asagi and confusion that his work was once again the subject of controversy.
Tori sighed heavily, sinking to the floor as if she had lost all interest in what was happening.
—Well, that's it. She always ruins all the fun.... Kyo's masterpieces always arouse our keen interest, it's hard to stop when you have such a beautiful painting in front of you. I want to admire her forever, - she was genuinely upset.
— You can do it from the outside. And with your reputation, you shouldn't come closer than two meters to Kyo, - Asagi replied calmly, to which everyone else just laughed.
— Asagi, you're a pest, I can't see anything! - Tori demanded again.
-That's great,— Asagi replied calmly.
-Wh-what? - Tori asked angrily, her eyes wide with surprise.
The group smiled again, and Kyo, watching these twists and turns, just shook his head, not quite understanding how such madness could arise from his simple drawing.
Minato approached Kyo, who was deep in thought, carefully studying his drawing.
—Kyo, Nurse Hinata wants you to be her next patient, - he said, pulling his friend away from his contemplation.
—Okay, - Kyo replied, confused, once again immersed in the details of her work.
-Don't worry, Kyo, Asagi will look after your drawing. — The girl stretched out her hand to the drawing, when suddenly someone pushed her away.
It was Minato, who hastily snatched the drawing from her and hugged it to himself.
—?! - exclaimed Asagi in surprise.
—No, Kyo, let me take care of your drawing. These women are too emotional to care for such a treasure. They'll just tear up your painting, - Minato said with a serious look, as if his words were wise.
-What? Who did you call women? — the girl was indignant, crossing her arms over her chest.
-Aren't you a woman? Mm, what is it? - Minato bent down, peering at the drawing.
When he got a little closer, he started laughing.
-What kind of scribble? — he demonstrated his indifference to art.
Kyo, feeling that his words were causing laughter, stepped aside, remaining at a loss. He just watched as the head bully in the class made fun of his work.
-Let's talk about your screams in Hinata's nurse's office, - he suggested, trying to steer the conversation to another topic.
-I wasn't shouting at all! We had a nice chat with her while you were all looking at this girl's children's drawing, - Minato continued calmly.
-Kyo's a guy, unlike you, dude, - one of the classmates chimed in, trying to cheer Kyo up.
—Yeah, and drawing is all girly stuff, - Minato interjected.
-You're just jealous that Kyo draws better than you, - Asagi said, raising an offended eyebrow.
-You're all jealous of me because, unlike you fools, I was flirting with nurse Hinata. I even touched her breasts. Hehe, - Minato remarked smugly, clearly proud of himself.
— No, that's not true! - Several voices shouted in unison, not believing him.
- This is a blatant lie! - Someone added, laughing.
- How would you know if you weren't there? Oh, you should have heard Nurse Hinata moaning. How her angelic voice called my name, - Minato continued, clearly enjoying his fantasy.
-Shut up! - Asagi shouted, clearly tired of his chatter.
-I can't take this anymore, - she gasped, clenching her fists in exasperation.
—Hehe, I told you you were jealous of me, - Minato summed up smugly, clearly not realizing that he had become the object of ridicule.
Kyo, who was left without his drawing, only smiled slightly, watching this comedy, while the class was filled with streams of laughter.
Timeskip:
-That's it, you can go, Kyo, - said Nurse Hinata, removing the tools from the work table.
-Is that all? - Kyo asked in surprise.
—Yes,— she replied, smiling, though there was weariness in her eyes.
-It's strange, but I didn't even feel any pain, - Kyo remarked, getting up from his chair.
-Apparently, you were focused on something else and forgot about her for a while, - the nurse commented.
-No, you don't understand, I didn't feel it from the very beginning, when the needle just touched my skin, - Kyo insisted, frowning heavily.
— You could have just lost your memory due to a severe shock, you have already had this. You have nothing to worry about. You better take care of your condition. You need a clear head on your shoulders, exams are just around the corner. You know what your next refusal of certification will mean.
-I'm going to lose my friends, - he said, dejectedly lowering his eyes.
-That's right. So don't fill your head with unnecessary garbage, - Hinata replied, trying to calm his fears.
-Well, wait a minute! I've been remembering everything down to the smallest detail lately, and I assure you there's something wrong with my body! I don't feel pain anymore, unlike the rest of the kids! And this is not the least of my concerns. Maybe you can schedule an examination for me? - Kyo insisted, his voice getting more insistent.
-Go away, Kyo, - Hinata said, her calmness starting to crack at the seams.
—?! - He was amazed.
For the first time in all this time, coldness flashed in the nurse's eyes.
-I'll tell the doctor that you have memory problems, - she said with displeasure, as if dismissing all his arguments.
—But... but... - Kyo couldn't find the words to express his concern.
-Didn't you want to get checked out?-Hinata interrupted him, her voice becoming sharper.
—Y-yes... - He nodded apologetically, realizing that her patience was running out.
-Now, please leave my office. - And try to get all the nonsense you're talking out of your head right now, - she said sternly, returning to her business.
-It will be done, Nurse Hinata, - Kyo replied reluctantly, feeling anxious.
— See you soon. Be a diligent boy and we'll figure something out, - she said, but there was no warmth in her voice anymore. It was just a parting gesture.
—Okay,— Kyo said softly, leaving the office and closing the door behind him.- And, as always, you will forget to schedule an examination for me...
The footsteps in the hallway seemed muffled, as if they were moving away from his heart. He didn't know what to do next, but the feeling of danger wouldn't leave him. Although he tried to convince himself that everything would be fine, thoughts of the strangeness happening to his body would not let him rest, and he realized that perhaps this was just the beginning.
Kyo walked down the corridor, clutching the ruined drawing tightly in his hands. Looking at the stains left by Minato, he hated himself. He took a deep breath, realizing how much effort he would have to spend to fix it. Thinking about exactly what he had done gave weight to his steps, and deep down he hoped that soon he would be able to put it all behind him and immerse himself in silence, where he could really focus.
Soon he will leave the walls of the school and go outside, where he can feel his bare feet touching the grass. This painting gave him hope — to connect with nature, feel the fresh air and lock all unnecessary thoughts in a drawer, close and lock it securely. He dreamed of moments of peace when nothing would stop him from drawing inspiration and taking a break from the turbulent school world.
"They say there is nothing more valuable in the world than friendship," he thought. He wondered if that was really the case.
"If you don't have any friends, can you be considered a real person? Friends, as an immutable truth, complement us, protect us from selfishness and give rise to a desire to help and share".
From an early age, he learned to share toys, feelings, and secrets.
"But what if you let down those who are dear to you? What's the point of friendship if others suffer because of your mistakes?"
Thoughts full of doubts assailed him, and he could not find answers to them. These questions tormented him in the same way as when he was a child, when he dared to ask adults about love - about what kind of feeling it was. They just laughed, threw up their hands, called him a stupid simpleton. "You'll figure it out soon enough," they said. "Let fate do your dirty work for you. Through suffering and experience, understanding will come."
However, with each passing year, Kyo felt that the more he looked for answers, the fewer he had left. He didn't look for them from others. It was as if in this world of true friendship there was some kind of forbidden fruit, around which only dark figures circled, laughing, but not offering anything more meaningful.
"I don't even know what else to say," he thought, heading for the exit. He breathed in the fresh air, feeling his mind clear with each breath. For a moment, it seemed to him that all his worries were dissolving into the silence of nature.
But still one thought remained: "Where are the answers to all the questions?" He kept walking, trying to find his place in this world, while his feet softly stepped on the grass, and the wind gently ruffled his hair. Nature could probably tell you more than all the adults put together.
But nature was also silent, hiding the secrets of this world behind it.
Since then, I haven't asked other people any questions. And I no longer thought about the answers to my own. Until I met her. This day has changed my life. I will never forget the pain I saw in her blue eyes then. Her pleas for help were ignored by everyone around her. The handcuffs bound her hands so tightly that she couldn't move them, and pressed down on her skin so that her palms were literally covered in blood. And she walked, breathing heavily, as if she had been plowing in the field for several days and nights in a row. There were bruises under her eyes, and she was staggering as if she was going to faint. I had to do something!
-Come on, let's go, - one of the guards commanded.
I wonder who she is? Who does she remind me of? Suddenly it dawned on me—that girl from my drawings. It was her. I finally met her side by side. And now I need to ask her something.
-Wait! - I shouted, trying to attract attention to myself.
The guards leading the mysterious stranger stopped and stared at me in puzzlement.
– Why did you stop? It's just a kid. Let's go! - one of them said, unwilling to give up.
-Stop it! Can't you all see she's in pain? - I said, unable to contain my protest.
The girl sighed in surprise and looked at me, her eyes filled with hope.
–Listen, kid, - said the head of the guard, - Didn't adults teach you not to ask unnecessary questions of adults?
-I was taught, - I replied, without looking away.
-Then mind your own business.
They were about to leave when I called out to them again.
– And I was also taught that you can't leave another person in trouble.
All the guards froze, looking at me in surprise. Even that girl was amazed. Only the main one kept grinning as he approached me, with a contempt in his voice that made my heart beat faster. But I couldn't back down.
-Where did you see this man? She's covered in fur and looks like the monster she really is, - the head guard said coldly, as if that explained everything.
-She has two arms and two legs, just like us. Look at her long blonde hair. Aren't such signs only found in humans? - I objected, feeling a hot wave of righteous anger rise in me.
All the guards, following the example of their commander, laughed out of the blue.
-You don't know much about the world, son, - he said with contempt, and I felt that phrase slap me in the face.
-My horizons are much broader than yours, sir, - I couldn't resist answering without looking away.
The smile on the leader's face immediately disappeared. He roughly grabbed my shirt and pulled me towards him so that our foreheads touched. At that moment, I felt intense pain permeating my entire body. Cold blood was slowly dripping from my forehead, and I couldn't figure out how much longer it could go on.
-What's your name? - The question sounded like a death sentence.
I just silently recovered from the shock, trying to ignore his screams.
-I'm asking you your name, comrade. And if you don't tell me, I'll have to throw you in a cage to be eaten by that ogre, - he said threateningly, and I felt his words pierce me like a sharp blade.
-Kyo, my God, what's going on here? - A familiar voice rang out.
-A-asagi? - I didn't have time to be surprised.
– So you're Kyo, hmm. Now you're going to have big problems. And you won't get off that easy, son, - the guard said, pointing to my fright.
After Asagi, our teacher ran up to us, concern was written on his face, and I hoped that he would be able to help me out of this situation.
-Please forgive him, it's my fault. In the next lesson, we should only have a topic about how to distinguish monsters from humans and how dangerous they are to us, - our teacher said, trying to take responsibility for what had happened.
The mysterious stranger looked away, and I noticed that tears welled up in her eyes. Why was she so upset? Was she really so hurt by the teacher's words? Or was it something from the past that I didn't know about?
-Don't even think that I'm just going to let it all go. You've raised a far from noble young man. He supports man-eating monsters like her, - the senior guard growled, not hiding his contempt.
–I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I will definitely fix it. And we will publicly apologize to everyone, - the teacher tried to remain calm.
– Try not to neglect your duties anymore. Until your pupil gets off with house arrest, then it will come to a real prison, and then to execution, - he said with a threat that caused a tremor in my heart.
–O-okay, I'll try... - The teacher muttered, obviously realizing that the circumstances were stacked against us.
Asagi lowered her head in a sign of humility, and the three of us had to apologize to the entire assembly, except for her. She looked like her soul was bursting with bitterness and sorrow.
I spent the whole day in the garden, painting pictures under the strict eyes of the guards. It was awkward and terribly embarrassing, but luckily I got away with it. Strangely enough, my drawings did not arouse anyone's suspicions. I didn't think I'd be grateful to Minato for ruining my drawing—thanks to him, the punishment wasn't too harsh.
Nevertheless, the face of the mysterious stranger did not leave my mind. I tried to distract myself, but thoughts of her wouldn't leave me. What was she really like?
I wonder if we can ever meet again. What if she wasn't really a monster, but something more?
There were more and more questions, and I knew that I needed to find answers to them. But how? I felt a growing desire to protect her, at least from afar. What was done to her was unfair. And I realized that, despite the fear, I needed to learn more about her story and what lies behind that mask of fear.
-What are you thinking about, Kyo? - Asagi asked softly as I sat in the windows of my room, staring at the void. I didn't understand how so much time had passed. Three days full of anguish and thought were poisonous and depressing.
Every evening, Asagi came to me, treating my wounds and supporting me through these difficult times. That rascal from the guards gave me a good beating before he left, and now the wounds will take a long time to heal. How do I explain to the others what happened to me? Protecting a dangerous monster from humans? It even sounds funny. Shamefully.
-You keep thinking about her, don't you? Well, she's creepy, of course. When I saw her, I was speechless myself, - Asagi remarked, changing the bandages on my wrist.
–I wouldn't say that...I waved her off, not wanting her to think I was completely insane.
-Yes... you were brave back then. I don't even know what came over you. The stress must have affected you. The teacher explained to us all that you had hallucinations, and you mistook that monster for a human. But if you had seen her real appearance, you probably would have been scared, like I did.
That's how the teacher put the whole situation. Wise. I would like to tell Asagi the truth, but I decided it would be better to hide the details from her. This could make her doubt me as an adequate person, and then I would lose my only friend. I didn't want to upset her any more—it all fell on her shoulders so abruptly, and I could see how worried she was about me. It caused her great suffering, and I could feel it in her eyes, but I kept quiet for her own good.
-You know, I've read about beastmen. Their magic is very powerful, especially when you start to doubt yourself. It gives them more control over you. Apparently, she wanted to use you as her only chance to escape from here. And how good it is that General Friedrich saved you then. I can't even imagine what she would have done to you after you freed her. I was so afraid of losing you, Kyo...You were on the verge of death, and oh damn, just a little more and we'd never see you again...
Asagi clung to me, crying and hugging me tightly. I felt her clinging to me as if I were the only bulwark in this strange world.
-I'm sorry, Asagi. I was so stupid... I was defending something that wasn't worth defending, - I said sadly.
-No, Kyo, it's not your fault. You are a very empathetic person and ready to reach out to anyone in need. This is a truly good gift. This witch wanted to use it to save her callous soul from eternal imprisonment. You shouldn't blame yourself, no, not at all. I promise she'll get what she deserves. For treating you like that. I will personally take part in her torture. I will avenge you, Kyo. She will pay for all her misdeeds.
I took a deep breath and hugged Asagi back.
-Thank you, Asagi, for always being by my side.
– Of course, but should it be otherwise? You are a dear person to me and always will be, even if the witch's magic makes you different. I'll save you. I promise. I will follow you even into the bowl of the forest.
– Where the big, scary, gray wolf lives! Raaar! - I said, trying to dispel my gloomy thoughts.
We both laughed, and, at least for a moment, the tension subsided.
-I'm sure we'll find a way to defeat him.
– Yes, we are a good team.
It gives me confidence. No matter what happened, I knew that with Asagi by my side, we could overcome any challenge.
Suddenly, Asagi covered my eyes with her palms.
-By the way, I have a surprise for you. Close your eyes and don't peek, - she said with excitement in her voice.
-Aaah... Asagi, what is it this time? - I asked, feeling my curiosity growing.
-I'm sure you'll like it, - she reassured.
-Hmm, I wonder what it could be? - I said, smiling in anticipation of something good.
-Then look here and find out! - she exclaimed.
When Asagi took her hands away from my face, there was a large box lying on my lap.
-Wow, how did you do that? - I breathed out in amazement.
Asagi smiled at me as if it was completely natural.
-You know I'm a sorceress. Now open this. You can't wait to see what's inside, can you?
- Yes, you're right. - I opened the box and almost dropped the lid in surprise.
- Do not litter, naughty boy! - she said with mocking reproach.
- Y-yeah, sorry... - I muttered, getting ready to lift the lid, but her hand stopped mine.
- Let me? And you can take care of the surprise.
- Wow! I can't believe my eyes! - I exclaimed, seeing a lot of canvases, new paints and a drawing book. What wasn't there! She was right, I was absolutely delighted!
- Oh, well, sorry for bringing you down to earth, my dear angel, - she laughed, and I supported her laughter, - We all decided to give you a gift, to definitely compensate for the moral damage, - Asagi noted and blushed for a moment with anger.
- Although she should have done it. - But the freckles on her cheeks again depicted a blush.
I, unable to contain my delight, began to carefully examine all the new items.
- But that's not all!
- Anything else?
- Now you can walk late at night, when all the other children are asleep. At least something good happened, right?
- But why did they make such a decision?
- The adults think that you have not yet recovered from the magic of the witch-beastman, - she explained.
So that's what everyone calls her, then.
- And they also decided that it would be best to isolate you from the other children for now, so that you do not have a bad influence on them, although you could never harm others, and at the same time they do not want to deprive you of fresh air, which is so useful for your young body.
- You say that as if you were Nurse Hinata herself, - I noted with a smile.
Asagi laughed.
- Well, I wanted to become a doctor, silly.
- Sorry, it slipped my mind...
- Oh, come on, stop hitting yourself in the forehead...
- I can't, I'm so ashamed of my behavior.
- But you didn't do anything... - she reminded me, clinging to me.
Her support warmed my soul, and I met her gaze again.
- Thank you, Asagi. This surprise really helped me. I feel better.
Asagi smiled.
- We are together, and that's the main thing. Besides, now you have new colors, so I expect masterpieces from you.
- Definitely! - I promised, feeling the storm in my heart gradually subside.
With each word she said, I lifted the weight of recent events from my head and regained hope. Next to her, all the difficulties seemed less significant.
-Are you sure you won't need me? What if the witch still controls your mind... It's a big risk... - Asagi was worried, her voice was insistent.
- Yes, I'm sure. I'm stronger than her spell, and you, Asagi, shouldn't protect me like that. It's better to take care of yourself. When was the last time you slept? - I asked, feeling that her worry was sometimes too much.
- Don't worry, I'm fine, - she answered, but I noticed how her voice was shaking.
- The teacher told me, - I said to tease her.
- What a bore! I told him to keep his mouth shut! - Asagi was indignant, but I couldn't help but smirk.
She's so cute when she's angry. I couldn't help but laugh.
- Did I say something funny? - she asked, pouting.
- No, you're just really cute... - I said with a smile.
Asagi, embarrassed, hid her face behind her dress, and it was hilarious.
- Okay, Kyo, you're right, I need to sleep. See you tomorrow, I'll come see you in the morning, - she mumbled, trying to regain her serious look.
- What is it, Asagi? Are you really blushing? - I intervened, barely holding back a smile.
- N-no, it's just kind of stuffy in here, - she said, and her voice became even quieter.
- Usually, on the contrary, in such cases they try to get rid of excess fabric, - I noted, trying to defuse the situation.
- Oh, shut up already, - Asagi said, kicking me with all his might. - Pervert...
Her embarrassed gaze quickly looked away, and I felt a little awkward.
-Okay, goodnight, Kyo, I have to leave you for technical reasons... - she said, avoiding my gaze.
-Really, you...? - I started, but before I could finish, she kicked me in the chest.
-Shut up, shut up, shut up! - she exclaimed, hurriedly running out of my room while I was trying to catch my breath.
-Bye, Asagi... - I called after her, waving my hand.
By the time I started waving my hand, she had already disappeared around the corner.
-It's true, girls are so strange, you can never understand what's on their minds...-I muttered, smirking, and thought about how important it was to have people like Asagi around. She might be crazy and unpredictable, but that's what made her so special to me.
I was passing by Class R when I heard cheerful voices coming from behind the open door. The kids seemed to enjoy discussing viruses - they were singing songs about them, and their laughter echoed through the hallway as if it was the most fun topic in the world. I stopped for a moment, listening to their melodies and jokes.
- Viruses are fun! - someone from the class shouted, and the others joined in: "Viruses are cool!"
I couldn't help but smile. At times like these, I envied their carefree attitude.
I knocked on the door, and at that moment, all eyes turned to me. The kids instantly smiled and began knocking on the glass as if I were their old friend.
- Kyo! How is Asagi doing? What's new? Did you confess to her? - they shouted in unison.
I felt a slight blush appear on my cheeks. Their questions were unexpected and funny at the same time. I didn't know what to say. My head was spinning with thoughts of how I tried to find the right words for Asagi, but they always eluded me.
- Um... it's okay, - I mumbled, trying to hide my embarrassment. - Until I confessed.
The children began to make noise again, as if this was the most interesting thing that had happened all day.
- Don't worry! You can do it! - they encouraged me with sincere faith in success.
I didn't want to ruin their perfect view of this world, including their faith in my love for Asagi. Although I wasn't sure how I felt about her.
I looked away at the wall, trying to focus on something else. Suddenly, a rustling sound came from around the corner. I turned around and saw Asagi, who suddenly appeared from behind the wall with an angry expression on her face.
- Why are you scaring me? - I blurted out in a panic. The kids behind me burst out laughing, and I felt my cheeks heat up again. What if she'd been listening to me talk this whole time and was angry that I'd called her my girlfriend? What if she liked someone else?
I had to fix that!
I cleared my throat to get the others' attention.
-No, no, nothing like that,- I tried to reassure them,-She's not the girl I want.
The kids bowed their heads, as if they didn't understand what I'd said.
Of course it's important to protect the kids' psyche, but I don't want to die at Asagi's hands!
-Huh? But that's not what you just said.
-Brother Kyo is embarrassed by Sister Asagi!
-That's so cute, - the kids all chimed in, making me blush involuntarily.
-Forget what I just said. Brother Kyo has simply gone crazy...
When I met Asagi's gaze, I involuntarily cringed - she looked at me as if I were a pathetic insect under her feet, and with one look she could kill me. It seems her gaze scared the children too, because they all hid under the benches.
-Brother, is Sister Asagi so angry that you don't kiss her? - one of them said quietly, and this embarrassed me even more, so I started sweating.
Asagi began to show me with gestures that she was watching me. I swallowed hard and tried to speak confidently.
-Um... they were just joking! I... I didn't mean anything like that!
But the words stuck in my throat, and I realized that I looked stupid.
Unable to bear the tension, I turned around and walked away, trying to walk confidently, but my legs moved on their own, like ducks. I heard children's laughter behind me, which made me even more awkward.
Asagi clearly didn't like my behavior. She pouted and suddenly threw a shoe at me! I managed to dodge it, but this only spurred on the children's laughter. I felt even more awkward - as if the whole world was watching my failure.
-Hey! - I shouted back, but my emotions were still boiling inside me. I didn't know what to do with these feelings for Asagi or how to explain them to myself. Thoughts about how I should be braver were spinning in my head... but right now I just wanted to hide from all those stares.
Out of the corner of my eye, as I was leaving, I saw a doctor enter the office. He was holding a tray with injections, and all the children happily ran up to him, as if trying to study what he had in his hands.
Hmm, why do children of that age need vaccinations? What are they vaccinated against? Aren't such vaccinations strictly given from adolescence?
I sighed heavily. Okay, Nurse Hinata and Asagi were right, I was thinking about it too much, it could just be vitamins, kids usually don't want to take them in any form, especially pill form, so adults have to resort to tricks. That's where injections come into play. I remember Asagi crying so much when she got vitamin injections as a child and asking me to hold her hand. She was always so cute!
-Hm?
I was walking down the hallway when I heard shrill screams coming from behind the closed door of the lab. I stopped and looked inside and saw a terrible scene.
