Who killed Vincent Willem van Gogh?

          The person who I have identified as the murderer of Vincent van Gogh is this individual.

          Her name is Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, commonly known as "Jo." As her name suggests, she was the wife of Theo and thus the sister-in-law of Vincent. At that time, she was the daughter of the affluent Bongers family, working as an English teacher. She was the sister of André Bonger, a friend of Theo, and Theo fell in love with her at first sight. From there, Theo began to pursue her intensely, but initially, Jo was not receptive to his marriage proposal. However, overwhelmed by Theo’s sincerity, she eventually accepted his proposal. Later, she gave birth to their child, Vincent, taking her brother-in-law’s name, and probably thought that their happy days would last forever. But then, everything changed dramatically. When Theo was working at Goupil & Cie, he was quite a wealthy man, but after he became independent to sell Vincent’s paintings, he fell into poverty rapidly. As mentioned earlier, this was the reason.
          Three weeks before Vincent’s death, he visited their home, and during that visit, Jo reportedly sharply criticized Vincent directly, leaving him unable to reply. After her childbirth, she was surely pushed into such a dire situation, making her stance understandable.

          However, considering what happened on that day… a story clearly formed in my mind.

          Jo, carrying her newborn son Vincent, came to Auvers-sur-Oise to visit Vincent. Of course, this was a secret from Theo. Realizing that words would be useless with her husband, she decided to persuade Vincent once more and ask him to refuse her brother’s financial support. She found him alone in a wheat field, quietly painting. "Vincent… Hello."
          "Yes?" Startled by the sudden voice, Vincent turned around. "Johanna!? And little Vincent too… Where’s Theo?" Surprised by the unexpected visit from Jo and her son, Vincent was bewildered, but strangely, Theo was nowhere to be seen.
          "Today, I came without telling my husband because I have a favor to ask of you," Jo said in a calm tone, with a serious expression. "Oh…" Vincent immediately understood her intention from her stern expression and quiet tone.
          "As I said before, our finances are on the brink of collapse! We can’t raise little Vincent, who inherited your name, under these conditions. Please refuse your brother’s support!"
          "No… well… I… I’ve finally started to get some recognition for my paintings recently. I believe they will sell someday… I’m really sorry."
          "Ugh…"
          Vincent's vague reply, barely meeting her gaze, must have looked to Jo like a poverty demon or a god of poverty. At that moment, she noticed a pistol beside him.
          "What is this!? Jo bought such a thing when you have almost no money?"
          "N-No… that belongs to a mischievous kid from the neighborhood. I saw him playing with a squirrel and took it away because it was dangerous. It still has bullets in it, so don’t touch it. I’ll return it to his parents later…" Upon hearing this, a devil whispered in her ear.　(If I shoot Vincent with this pistol, the police will think he committed suicide, right?)
          She knew it was public fact that he had cut off his own ear and entered a psychiatric hospital, and she thought the police would treat his death as an impulsive act by a mentally ill patient. Steeling her resolve, Jo quickly seized the pistol during a moment when Vincent was distracted.
          "Huh?" Gunfire echoed around, and Vincent felt intense pain in his left side. Looking at Jo, Vincent saw she was trembling as she pointed René’s pistol at Vincent, and white smoke was drifting from the muzzle.
          "Why…?" Muttering this, Vincent lost consciousness and collapsed.
          "It’s your fault… because you’re ruining our happiness," Jo seemed to tell herself, trying to suppress her guilt. She then placed René’s pistol beside Vincent and quickly tried to leave the scene.
          "No!" Regaining her composure, she realized something. It was the easel and paints nearby. If these remained at the scene, it would suggest Vincent had committed suicide while painting. But even if he was mentally ill, it was unnatural for him to kill himself during active creation.(The police might suspect murder!) Thinking this, she hurriedly collected the art supplies, threw them far from the crime scene, and fled back home.

          Several hours after Jo left, Vincent regained consciousness from the intense pain. Fortunately, his vital organs were missed, and he narrowly avoided death. "Ugh…" Enduring the pain, Vincent desperately considered what had happened to him. (Could I have pushed Johanna this far…) The feelings Vincent harbored toward Jo were not anger but overwhelming guilt. He reflected on how he had relied too much on Theo. He noticed that the pistol was still nearby.(I can’t leave it like this.) He thought someone might get hurt again with that pistol, and the possibility that Rene might be suspected as the culprit crossed his mind. He threw the pistol to a place a little away and, despite the pain, managed to reach his humble lodging.

          The innkeeper, seeing him bleeding, realized something serious had happened and called a nearby doctor. Unfortunately, the doctor specialized in obstetrics and couldn’t perform surgery, so the family’s regular psychiatrist, Dr. Gachet, also arrived.

          "Hey! What happened!? Who shot you?"
          "No, I… shot myself."
          "Don’t be ridiculous! How could you shoot yourself in a place like this?"
          "No, I… I shot myself. Please don’t blame anyone…"

          No matter how much Dr. Gachet pressed him, Vincent wouldn’t speak. A few hours later, Jo returned to her Paris home from Auvers-sur-Oise, and her husband Theo came back in a panic.

          "Jo! Something terrible has happened!" Jo, of course, immediately understood what he was upset about.
          "I… I just received a telegram. My brother attempted suicide with a gun!"
          "What!? I can’t believe it. To think he’d die…" Jo responded as if she knew nothing, with the face of a great actress.
          "No, he’s not dead! But he’s seriously injured. He’s currently undergoing a doctor’s examination, and we’re leaving for Auvers-sur-Oise right away!"
          "No… that can’t be…" Hearing her husband's words, Jo probably felt her spine turn cold.
Right after the gunshot, she hadn’t confirmed Vincent’s death. The brother-in-law she thought was dead was alive… If the doctor, police, or Theo learned the truth, her life would be over. "Sorry… I’m feeling a bit faint…"
          "What? Are you okay?" Overwhelmed by despair, Jo fainted.
          "I see… it’s a shock. I understand. Stay with our son at home. I’ll contact you if anything happens." Thinking he misunderstood her favorably, Theo said that and headed straight to his brother’s place. But left alone with her son in her home, Jo could only fear the worst future that was surely coming.

          Some time later, Theo arrived at the humble lodging where Vincent was. He was badly injured but had been trying to distract himself from the pain with cigarettes.

          "Vincent! What happened? Why did you try to kill yourself?"
          "…I just want to die." Even with his beloved brother, Vincent never revealed the truth.
          But in the end, he left one last word: "Sorrow lasts forever…"With that, Vincent passed away two days after the incident, on July 29.

          It’s clear whom those words were directed at. Of course, they were spoken to the "Theo family."
Even if Jo was not arrested by the police, the tragic life of "the sister-in-law who shot her brother" and her husband—her brother—would be an eternal tragedy. When Theo told her about it after returning home, Jo must have felt like she had a narrow escape. Because Vincent quietly passed away without revealing to the doctor, police, or her husband that she had shot him with a pistol.

          Fortunately—or perhaps as Jo had suspected—the police officially declared Vincent’s death a suicide. But as he predicted, the real sorrow was only beginning. About half a year after his death, Theo suddenly weakened rapidly and also died in a mental hospital.

          I can easily imagine why Theo’s health declined so suddenly. He likely realized at some point that Jo had committed the act. He must have desperately tried to figure out who the murderer was. And the only person he could suspect, as I did, was his wife. (No… Jo could not have killed my brother?)
          He could never have asked his wife about such a terrifying truth. But given the circumstances, he can’t think of anyone else as the culprit. His life and heart reaching their limit, overwhelmed by the thought that his beloved wife might have murdered his beloved brother, he finally passed away.

          Jo’s mental state at the moment of her husband’s death is unimaginable. She only wanted to be happy, yet she shot her brother-in-law who tried to protect her with a gun, and she even caused her husband’s death… The weight of her sin must have been so heavy that she probably considered turning herself in to the police. But she couldn’t do it. Because there was her newborn Vincent. Contemplating how to atone for this great sin, she looked at the countless paintings left behind by her brother-in-law and her husband and made her decision.
