Shinichi Takahashi wandered through the entertainment districts almost every night. Though he worked for a major corporation in the heart of the city and held the impressive-sounding title of section manager, his home life had collapsed. His wife and child had left for the countryside. What remained was nothing but the endlessly swelling stress of work and the exhaustion that sank deep into his body. Every weekend he went to brothels. Drawn by the glittering neon lights, he would pay for a woman’s warmth in a cramped private room. Yet even in the act itself, his heart remained parched. Money drained away, emptiness piled up. For a man already past his mid-thirties, it was nothing but consumption. One evening, as he sat in a dim room, cigarette smoke curling around him, Shinichi thought: I’m only pouring money into desires that others hand me.
